10/01 no calculator. If you thought you needed one you've either completely forgotten how to do basic math; or missed the easy way to do some of the problems.

Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason? Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful? --Zachris Topelius Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. All in my head - the footsteps one nearly had me check the calculator - but 225 * 4 = 900 so it was a question of a stride being 0.4cm or 40cm... :-D

That's the only one I got wrong, as I missed the "in cm" bit at the end. Not really math, more reading. Iain.

I scored 100% :) Used a calculator for two of the three Mount ... questions because I was too lazy to calculate it on paper. Did the rest in the head.

Why would that be questionable? How do you think the speedometer calculated the average speed? Obviously it took the total 6 km and divided it by the total time of 1/3 hour to arrive at 18 km/h.

I was fine until the car questions. I'm behind a websense firewall and couldn't see the picture (I assume there was a picture) so had to guess those!

Before being allowed to use one rotted my brain I was able to do problems like 98*76 or 9*876 in my head faster than anyone could tap the buttons on the idiot box and win about half the time with problems like 98*765 or 9*8765. If I wanted to show off I could do problems like 9876*54321 too but had no chance of beating a button masher. My informal test for how clueful grade school teachers were was to see how long it took before they realized that if they were going to offer a prize for a basic in class math-game (generally flashcard speed) that unless they offered them for the top two spots they might as well just save some time and give it to me at the start of the day.

You are correct. I got the idea. The average speed by speedometer was based on the actual time and distance she traveled.
