What is amazing is the crash shown in the opening of The Six Million Dollar Man was a real crash and the pilot walked away from it. (Well, was carried away from it). Bruce Peterson was his name. He hated the programme as it kept reminding him of the worst day of his life. (Although I suspect that 1st of May 2006 wasn't a good one for him either).

The US lifting body research programme.... as a ten year old I was spurred on to develop my own lifting body programme*, resulting in the eventual destruction of several saplings and me being sent home from school for 'playing with explosives and causing a menace in the playground'... happy days. * it was a model of the M2-F2 made from sheet steel, approx 75cm across, powered by a home made solid fuel rocket motor and 'got up to speed' by a glider launch bungee.

Doubtful. It was probably one of his better days of late, given his lengthy illness.
