Like every other programmer, I have no superiors and damn few equals. However, from time to time I need help on some projects. How do you find people who are willing to help on private projects? Not something you'd want to farm out to vworker or freelancer, but find people who are willing to join in? Has anybody run a project that found partners online?

I've had no success doing this, not because of a lack of smart developers, but because I haven't found anyone who's overly interested in the kind of stuff I'm doing.  For this reason, I've resorted to instead using sample code and canned examples in the public domain as an alternative to building something from scratch. Admittedly, today's tools make it insanely easy to collaborate remotely. /ravi

I have tried with my open source project online to encourage contributors. I have found nobody willing to participate despite the popularity of each new release (500k downloads in 4 years). My impression is that most people want to either create their own projects or want to make a fast buck - I have had plenty of people suggesting I team up with them to make money which usually involves me doing all the work and them getting a cut(needless to say they all get turned down at their first contact nowadays).

Typically it would be paid/share for private projects and volunteer for public ones. I could see a big issue in how to structure an agreement such that nobody feels like they are getting the shaft...

I'd love to collaborate with others, I even filed a request to Chris that he lets me know whenever he sees something that could possibly done by a non-CP-paid dev (e.g. volunteer work). Sadly most of this work needs access to the entire source code, which they can't provide. Other work is hard to find, everyone wants either to make a fast buck or pull up his own project.

I know CP has a beta feature called Workspaces, which is close to what I would be looking for. It has a place you can post a Workspace, it has Git source control, tasks, etc. It has a couple problems, it requires me to send an invite to you (I will be suggesting a change for this). Next part is that it doesn't have a project synopsis. Maybe workspaces can be expanded into a project sharing system, but right now its only for open source projects.

That should just be a beta restriction. It shouldn't continue when it goes live.

I don't mean invite to workspaces itself, I mean if the person is a workspace user and I want them to join the project, I have to invite them to join my project... There is no way (that I can see) that I can choose a project and say "Join" or "Apply".

A bit off topic... I'm able to see you project - fork and possible change it... Is that because I'm also on Workspace beta - or everyone with the proper URL can do this?

I think anybody (who can log into Workspaces) can fork and modify, but that doesn't change the original code base obviously. It basically creates a new project from another one.

As Ron says, anyone can fork and change it (as long as they have the relevant CP permissions). Can you read the task list though?

What ever happened to the Code Project job listings forum? I remember from a long time ago that people would post listings asking for help with projects there. Do you have a specific need right now or are you just asking in general?
