I'm not sure about everything being better than before. Overall, it's a definite improvement though.

Vista was pretty bad...but...it was too security focus, too slow, and far, far too expensive. Win 8 was a back step stepwise away from actual usability which is a much worse crime. ME was an April Fools joke that got out to the public, and Win 1.0 was just cr@p. Mind you, compared with DOS it...was still cr@p, yes. But better than Win 8!

I still don't get all the hate - all you need do is install a start menu replacement and it all works as expected (better than Win7).

I know Win8 is not very popular here, but from the people using it, have you already upgraded to 8.1 ? Is this only like a service pack, or a fresh install ?

just did a config of a new laptop with Win 8.1 for my father in law. I stick with my original comment. Win 8 is not suited for laptop or desktop machine. It's more for touch screen devices. Try explaining Win 8 to an elderly user just coming from Win Xp and is not interested in PC's at all. :|

I just got a new Windows 8 PC for SWMBO, and upgraded it to 8.1, so herself can have her old style "look and feel". Pretty painless and it's now set up with a nice Weven-looking desktop.

I know the desktop button is back, but can you configure the PC to launch the desktop by default? Perhaps I missed that, because by default it's all tiles...

I would say it's like a service pack. It's not bad of an update. I have only noticed a few changes that I don't mind. Personally, I don't mind Win 8. Not calling it the greatest OS, but it is certainly not the worst.

I certainly do agree. Yeah, you can get by using it on a laptop, but it does make sense for it to be on exclusively on touch devices. The one thing (maybe more) that throws me off is why allow the "desktop mode" enabled on touch devices. Not sure where MS was going with that. Maybe they didn't know either. :)

There must be a setting because my machine (Dell) launches to the desktop, but I didn't do anything to get it to do that. I just purchased the machine and had Win 8.1 installed by a tech in the IT mall that was working in collaboration with the shop where I purchased the machine. It launched to the desktop and I was happy about that. :-D

You got my curiosity up so I did a little investigation and came up with this. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2043243/how-to-boot-to-desktop-mode-in-windows-8-1.html[^] Mine is worded a little differently - "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start." - but does the job.

That was my impression also. Because I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts I was able to navigate easily regardless of where Windows launched. Windows 8.1 just makes it a little easier because my machine launches to the desktop instead of Start.

Service pack. The only gotcha during setup is that if you declined to create an MS account for your logon with 8.0, the option to keep using your local logon instead of creating an MS account in the setup wizard is hidden somewhere you're unlikely to find unless you've got a second computer/tablet/etc available to BingGoogle it. Once installed you'll probably want to change the default start screen search behavior. After going too far one direction by separating app/doc/setting results to separate screens in 8.1 MS overshot the other direction and in addition to combining all three of those will also send your search string to Bing and add results from there in unless you check the don't do that checkbox.

I have. It was like a service pack (unless you're upgrading from the beta).

I know Win8 is not very popular here, but from the people using it, have you already upgraded to 8.1 ? Is this only like a service pack, or a fresh install ?

the upgrading process scans and fixes a lot of driver issues and fixes your registry. It looks like a good idea to upgrade.

Off the top of my head. 1. Startup time - drastically improved. 2. Memory requirements - improved. 3. File System performance - improved. You know, the core functions of an O/S. Apart from that, follow the herd and ignore it.

                                          1. I can't remember when my OS was down last time... 2. For sure - no parallel applications so no memory needs... 3. You may got a new SSD with it :) It has a too hard Microsoft way or no-way build into it. OS is not only performance but usability and user-friendly. You just got an enlarged phone... But it's OK with me - I'm on Fedora 5 years already and all my Windows machines are virtual...(including one 8.1)
