Those who sign up, make a brief foray into the Lounge, post a bit and leave after a short period, bored or offended or getting a life. I bet there have been hundreds if not thousands of them. The permanent fixtures are few and far apart. Even fewer are those with less than four digit member IDs. Then there are the sock puppets. I would post under my real identity, but that is too risky nowadays. Though we theoretically have freedom of expression, even the most casual statement could be misconstrued and come back to bite you on the behind. Since what is released onto the internet can never be truely retracted, it is not worth the risk. I wonder how many members would be left if inactive accounts were wiped and members renumbered? (Remeber RENUM from the bad old days when editors couldn't move the caret location vertically? Like that) Around three times the online count, accounting for time zones? Maybe add another 50k for sporadic visitors?

I don't post under my real identity because I don't want what I say to be censored by what I fear may happen in the future. If someone wanted to find out who I was it wouldn't be hard at all. There are some who seem to post under their real names, and I am astonished by what they post - I imagine them applying for a job with me; I'd google, find their posts and it would affect my judgment of them. Even those who post with a pseudonym who readily 'expose' their identities are naive IMHO. Take DD for example. Running for a place in local government - does he not realise the opposition will use what he posts in drunken nights to their advantage? Or MM - posting 4-letter-word drunken waffle is amusing to us regulars (generally!) but a potential employer?

Since there are around 70K online right now, I think a thousand is a bit low.

Other than Chris, Uwe, and David, I don't recall any less-than-four digit members. I think most of them have died of old age, or have found more rewarding careers as gigolos. I post under my real name because all of my aliases are wanted by several different scary agencies.

I admit to being one of those "ephemeral" members, will try and change things going forward. But let's face it, there are those of us who are very busy (lack of a life comes to mind :laugh: ). And while we may not have time (or a bit of brain power) to spare for a reply, it does not mean we don't want to be part of this community, or that it isn't important to us. I get up at 5ish AM, grab a coffee, and start my day reading the various articles I get emailed - and the ones I enjoy the most are those from the CodeProject Daily News. It gets my mind engaged for the day ahead, and I feel connected with a community that "gets" me and what I do. In any case, I know too that a site such as this thrives when members contribute in any positive fashion, and I will do more to engage going forward...

I lurk, read, and reply sometimes with usually a failed attempt at humor. Usually by the time I’ve found something online everyone else has seen it and its old news. So rarely do I start a topic. On a general note, there are enough other people to stirring the pot so I don’t need to :)
Common sense is admitting there is cause and effect and that you can exert some control over what you understand.
