Visual Studio form editor incredibly slow
-
Hello all, I've come across an issue recently whereby the Windows form editor in VS2010 runs extremely slow on my home PC. The form editor loads okay but the instant I select any control on the form editor or try to scroll the screen then VS2010 pauses for 1-2 seconds while it appears to complete some form of processing. During this period I can observe the mouse cursor toggling frantically between the regular mouse pointer and the four-point movement cursor, so fast that it actually becomes a ghost of the two together. This process happens the instant I select any control on the editor. The code view works fine and when I run the program in debug mode it runs fine as well. It's just the forms editor that exhibits this problem. I have ruled out some peculiarity in my project solution by a) trying other projects and observing the same effect and b) trying the projects on my work PC where they can be edited in the forms editor without any of these issues occurring. The problem is not related to the relative performance of my home PC because in actual fact my home PC is a MUCH better specification than my work computer, and my work computer does not suffer this issue. So hardware-wise I definitely do not have a problem. I should also mention that I run the exact same version of VS2010 professional at home as at work. Also, I have attempted to rule out any weird VS2010 setting by exporting the settings on my work PC and then importing them on my home PC. Unfortunately this did not resolve my problem. I have also tried uninstalling VS2010 and reinstalling - same issue. Finally, I have had a little play in the VS2010 settings myself. I have tried stopping any extensions/add-ins/macros from running. I have tried disabling hardware acceleration. Also, in the Windows Form Designer area of the Options box I have tried disabling Toolbox auto-populate. This didn't sound like it would be the cause of the issue to me but a google search showed that other people have had issues with this. Unfortunately for me it was not the cause of the problem. So, if you've made it this far (congratulations! Brevity is not my strong point!) then my question is: Does anybody have additional advice or ideas of things I can try to resolve this problem? Thanks in advance. =========== EXTRA INFO =========== Home PC runs Windows 7 Professional with VS2010 Professional.
