Hi, I want to buy a new laptop for .Net Programming and I'm trying to figure out what's the best for my case. What's your laptop model and configuration are you using and if you would change, what laptop and configuration would you have? Maybe I get the Dell XPS 13 with a i7 4500U / 8Gb RAM 1600 Mhz / 256Gb SSD, what you think?

If you can, upgrade to 16G and a 512 SSD. That will probably give you 7 years of service. If you want a small footprint (but will always use a large monitor and full-size keyboard and mouse), I'd recommend going with a Brix Pro[^] instead of a laptop. /ravi

I had originally planned to get a Zenbook UX301, but the spec I wanted appeared to be vapourware and I lost interest in it. Scott Hanselman mentioned the X1 in one of his presentations a couple of weeks ago and he appeared to be impressed with it.

Get as much memory as possible. I think a latest generation i5 (don't know the code names nowadays) might be sufficient for most programming needs.

I agree. If the choice is between: more memory/bigger SSD with an i5 or: less memory/smaller SSD with an i7 then go for the i5 option. The processors these days are fast enough (certainly the i5) that the memory and disk bottlenecks are the biggest problems.

I got the XPS 15 with similar specs and that is amazing. What I like most about it is the display. My work laptop is a 2 year old i5 with a 256Gig SSD and I've never noticed a performance difference between the two. Everything runs just as fast on my 4 year old i7. If you get decent hardware these days, I don't think you can really go wrong.

I'm 6'4" and I have big hands, so coding on a laptop is not an option for me. I use mine solely to go to client sites. For my desktop I have 2 24" monitors, wireless keyboard & mouse... all the standard desktop enhancments. I also own a laptop and the once or twice I tried to work on it I gave up. Unless you're going to plug in monitors & a keyboard/mouse, go with a desktop.

This X1 is pretty much one of the best machines one can get, but it doesn't come with an anti-glare display, does it? I'm no friend of the glossy ones, that's why I'm considering a X240 instead.
