It probably got a 1 for a couple of reasons, 1. It should have gone in the Soapbox 2. Most of us are pretty sick of reading this kind of post. As Chris said the other day, the way to show people we aren't interested in a subject is with our votes. Actually, they give the ACs of CP a feeding frenzy. The rating system was created to be a good thing, but the pathway to hell is paved with good intentions. It's abused by idiots; therefore, the normal CPians either play the idiot game or brush it off - which makes the whole rating system pointless in the first place. [edit] BTW, I'm also tired of the political (and cricket ;P) posts, but I believe well-placed "shut the hell up" comments by the guys up top (that's you Chris) would do more than a rating. I wonder why there is so much America bashing then? Odd. I was just commenting that well thought out pro-American posts get a much better response than the "We, the US, rock, you, Rest Of World, suck" posts we often get. Anyway. Don't want to argue about this with you Jeremy. You know my feelings on the US and I know yours. Plus you are a Good Yank, don't want to ruin that ;)

It's not cool at all  The world faces a competition between the self-interests of Saddam and his French and German friends ... Anyone who says that French and Germans are Saddam's friends must be totally crazy. ... and British and American-led interests seeking to enforce international law This must be a joke ...

Or is it only really offensive to Southerners? I don't mean bad as in you, or they, might get a bit offended. Bad as in if I said it at Grand Central in New York (or wherever the word is taboo) I would be promptly pushed onto the rails and then hung up as an example? e.g. Like Kafir is a no-no word in South Africa. Thing is a lot of movies use it (don't reply with "That is the movies Paul" because we would never use Kafir in a movie even) and from my understanding it is quite a light, jovial term. Like redneck or hillbilly.

Yanks are only bad in the context of North vs. South, I think at this point in our history most people are blissfully unaware of the Brits (and their previous colonies) tendency to refer to us as Yanks. I honestly believe that quite a few Americans nowdays even know about us being "yanks".:~ Uptight Ex-Military Republican married to a Commie Lib - How weird is that?

Whenever we are being flippant about Americans we also call them Yanks. Just like there are the Poms, the Frogs etc. Thanks.

I would rather be called a Texan - that most superior form of American. If called a yank it had best be done at long range. Do Brits like being called a "Limey ". Do most even know where that term came from ?. Richard In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love; they had five hundred years of democracy and peace and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. Orson Welles
