Men would rather give themselves an electric shock than sit alone in a room with nothing to do

So, sat in a room, with nothing to do for 15 minutes but press a button that they knew would administer an electric shock, 12 out of 18 men pressed it and six out of 24 women. These people intentionally gave themselves an electric shock. An electric shock. Those who shocked themselves, did so an average of 1.47 times during the 15 minute period. Except for one maverick. Who did it 190 times.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

This is why those people who want to go to Mars are insane. Unimaginable levels of boredom.

I would have had the button and the chair dismantled inside the first 5 minutes.

Someone has trouble jumping to the right conclusion. Being alone does not mean that one "automatically" starts with thinking. Being bored for fifteen minutes and discovering the environment does NOT mean that one does not want to think. Nobody likes to be bored, but an empty room also does not invite for personal reflection. Where do they keep finding these so-called "researchers"?

I'd press it. Probably not 190 times though. But after a couple of minutes I'd get curious about that shock. A minute more and I'd have to know. Of course I'd be thinking the whole time - about that shock.
Curiously, I wouldn't I already know what an electric shock feels like, and go out of my way to avoid them...

It's a well-known fact that the vast majority of people can't stand being alone, and need to be in some kind of communication with other people at all times -- hence the overwhelming popularity of mobile phones and social media, and even fora like this one (although I think people come here when they don't want to work, rather than to not be alone). People generally are a pack of bluddy idiots who don't have enough ideas in their heads to keep them busy for five minutes.

Indeed. I don't own a cell phone, I don't have a twitter or facebook account, and I actually prefer being left the f*ck alone for extended periods of time.

But would you do it? :-) Then you should consider the possibility that the train line you stand above has overhead lines with 25kv. (650V third rail sounds more like the underground to me.) Still probably safe actually. But would you do it?

Not really - not just because of the risk, but because I don't consider it acceptable to pee in public. It's bad enough having to clean dog pee off car and motorcycle tyres - human pee I don't want to have to clean up, so why should I make someone else do it?

Now the real question is: What would it look like if more than one person was in the room, and pushing the button would shock at least one of them. Now is it going to be boredom to drive those people to push the button?! ... probably not!
