Thousands to lose their jobs as Microsoft prepares biggest ever round of layoffs

If MS can't make money, this is how trying to save money or ? :^) http://news.yahoo.com/thousands-lose-jobs-microsoft-prepares-biggest-ever-round-114013833.html[^] This is very bad.
I guess this means the US will be able to fill those tech jobs which it was supposed to have openings for. This is terrible news. The DOJ investigation of Microsoft in 2000 really hurt the tech industry -- broke the bubble -- and this probably won't be good either. So much more competition for jobs now. Who needs that!?! :)

Meh! Unless you are one of those being laid-off - this is actually very good. Microsoft (today) is too big, too slow and too set in their ways. According to insiders politics between divisions often stalls or kills good ideas. In hindsight, it probably would have been better for end-users, stock-holders and employees if Microsoft would have been split up decades ago during the DOJ anti-trust case.

Nope. I've never owned MSFT stock (unless it was grouped into a mutual fund :~ ).

Typical post-takeover layoffs. It's probably the bulk of the Nokia developers. MS doesn't need them, it's got lots of its own.

Hopefully, it'll be the team that designed Windows 8 and the Ribbon... Bet it isn't, though...

More likely it will be all those who still think a keyboard is a handy device. :sigh:

Perhaps they're laying off only those that use text speak.

It is well known that employees are the cause of all trouble. Getting rid of them will therefore solve everything.

Company acquisitions always lead to lay offs, that's not news, unfortunately. Business always overlap in areas and cuts need to be made. The problem in this case is that we are talking about the merging of two huge companies, that lead to scary layoff numbers. But if you look closer, 5k lay offs out of 90k nokia employees isn't that big of a percentage.

Unless you happen to be one of the 5k! A 100% chance of being without a job is not fun for anyone and glossing over it with the 'small percentage' argument is disingenuous at best, cruelly cynical at worst!
I'm not saying it is fun, or it is good, just it is expected. I've seen much worse cases (percentage wise) with people I worked with.

A good thing. The only company that is can survive despite economic failure and over staffing is Government Inc, the others need to adapt.

I heard Microsoft wants to change their corporate culture and the easiet way to do that is to get rid of a bunch of workers to scare the rest into changing their ways. It will work for a while, but the old culture will reassert itself. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
