    Company acquisitions always lead to lay offs, that's not news, unfortunately. Business always overlap in areas and cuts need to be made. The problem in this case is that we are talking about the merging of two huge companies, that lead to scary layoff numbers. But if you look closer, 5k lay offs out of 90k nokia employees isn't that big of a percentage.

    Unless you happen to be one of the 5k! A 100% chance of being without a job is not fun for anyone and glossing over it with the 'small percentage' argument is disingenuous at best, cruelly cynical at worst!

      I'm not saying it is fun, or it is good, just it is expected. I've seen much worse cases (percentage wise) with people I worked with.

        A good thing. The only company that is can survive despite economic failure and over staffing is Government Inc, the others need to adapt.

          I heard Microsoft wants to change their corporate culture and the easiet way to do that is to get rid of a bunch of workers to scare the rest into changing their ways. It will work for a while, but the old culture will reassert itself. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

            Expected post-merge layoffs, it's really bad but, unfortunately, that's the way of doing business; in the bright side, they may try to join the Jolla team and improve their OS.

              Meh! Unless you are one of those being laid-off - this is actually very good. Microsoft (today) is too big, too slow and too set in their ways. According to insiders politics between divisions often stalls or kills good ideas. In hindsight, it probably would have been better for end-users, stock-holders and employees if Microsoft would have been split up decades ago during the DOJ anti-trust case.

              I think MS too big. That's the same Windows or office. Next version's alway bigger and slower version before. I think MS only add more to next version. I don't know how to jobs of other like HR, environment, worker. Are they going to lose job?

                  CEO's only get pay raises by increasing savings. For a CEO to get 10 million raise, 100 million needs to be made.

                    EBITDA is a major contributor to CEO bonuses and is written into many CEO contracts. Also, lower expenses yields higher margins which has a positive correlation to stock price, which also is a portion of CEO compensation. No CEO worth his weight would take a contract driven solely on profits. That is too easy to lose. No, stock performance is a good one, EBITDA another, but not profits. Owner pay is driven by profits.

                      As far as I'm concerned it's still the fastest input device around - try telling that to users though, who mostly want 'point and clicky' interfaces...
