Why company did not stop the project earlier ?

So I was working on one of the project for my company for last one year. Converting existing old FoxPro based system to .NET based solution which is being used on factory floor. Application went in production last month and things are looking fine and today we got the news that company has decided to sell the business unit all together... They are in the process of flogging off that business unit for at least last 6 months as per the news.... I kind of don't understand why spend so much money on implementing a whole new system and upgrade the network ( they did the whole network upgrade at the factory and replaced all old equipments with new one ). I spent a fair amount of my time on implementing a system that whoever buy the business unit may or may not use. Kind of feeling sad that I implemented something that may or maynot be live in next few months :sigh:

Perhaps it makes the business unit more floggable? Running something on software which was discontinued about 7 years ago isn't the most attractive prospect for a potential buyer. [Edit] Just guessing BTW!

In addition to what the others have said, if you have been working on it for a year, it was probably started before upper management made the decision to divest the business unit. At which point they wouldn't stop it because that could alert people that the sale was in progress and potentially lower the price they might get for it - or even the stock price of the company as a whole if investors think it's a desperate move.

The MD's PA had bought some new glasswear (water jugs, glasses etc.) for the boardroom. Having seen this expensive crystal, I strolled to her desk and said "Nice pair of jugs!" I have never seen anyone go so red so quickly! These days the PC Police would probably chew my nadgers off for that!
