I am looking for a freeware package that will let me create my own UML diagrams. Checking SnapFiles, FreewareHome, and MajorGeeks, as well as asking Google, Yahoo, and Bing for their suggestions, these were my quick results... - "Dia" Looks like the best - "Altova" - Did not like it - "Visual Paradigm" - Did not like it - "Violet" - Looked interesting. Is "Dia" the best freeware UML generator for the time being ? I welcome feedback from those who really know UML well

The problem is, a product with good features is not always free. :-D You have to adjust with available products.

Pencil and paper. Don't commit anything to a diagramming app until it looks like it actually works.

Hey Peter, Nope - I'm with the communication support group. My new position will include a lot of IT-related stuff, since I will be responsible to keep the servers and applications running, in the rank of a Sergeant and later a Sergeant Major.

StarUML[^] is free and is a pretty good product. I've tried to learn it a couple of times but didn't see the need.

Hey Rage, good to hear from you. I'm currently at a Sergeant training, and just got two days off for the last weekend (the first two free days for two weeks). My position later will include Win/Linux server and application maintenance including user training, and is therefore not far away from what I used to do before I joined army. It seemingly attracts morons, and I feel like I know all of them. I still do work at my Springlog Project (in the spare free time I get) and started writing a new article yesterday. And that's how my life will look like until April. What have you been up to?

I clicked on the Link for StarUML, and saw a link that said: "Pre-Order Now"[^] in the top right hand corner I clicked and saw lots of confusion about money, but I think I barely grasp the payment aspect, I think, I hope. Please confirm, deny, or correct my thinking: This is free; yes ? After downloading, and using it like a freeloader (hey, the term finally has a fitting pun) I can voluntarily pay them when I feel philanthropic; yes again ?

How about paying really cheap for a paid version of Ms Visio. Checkout: http://www.win8keyau.com/[^] You pay like 8 times less to buy a product key and a link to a package to download. This is how I buy all my Microsoft products.

I really liked Visio but job change to a company that wouldn't pay for it, hence Dia gets my vote used it extensively for bloody years.

IBM Rhapsody Modeler [^] Is a freeware version of their full blown product. I have worked for with the full-blown product 5 years. With it I designed/implemented systems using the code generator and model debugger (target languages c, and c++). Since UML has the concept of an "active class" the full-blown product is capable of generating multithreaded OS-adapted ready to run executables. Currently I use the freeware version (no code generator, no model debugger) to design and document designs in javascript and other languages. The freeware version has a simple report generator with which you can get .rtf files out of the model for audiences that are not technically versed. For others, since the tool is free, they can can use the model itself.
