I find myself keeping my daughter home from kindergarden more and more these days. The more I look out at the chaotic and perilous state of the world the more I realize that quality time with loved ones is the only valuable commodity left. Any day now you could either be killed in a terrorist attack (ie Sept 11), or burned up in a night club in some freaky flash fire, or be killed in a car wreck, or whatever. I feel like the peace and security of my family is like sitting in the tranquil little eye of a global storm. Perhaps I'm just depressed. When I was young I used to wish I could just wave a magic wand and send all the evil people of the world to Pluto. Now that I'm older I think there would only be a few thousand people left on earth. Who would care for all the babies? The greatest war I'll ever fight is keeping the evil of the world out of my children's hearts. Their innnocence and purity is one of the most precious treasures in the world. Short of moving out into a shack in the middle of nowhere, what can you do though? It's only a matter of time I guess. But God save the ba***rd who deliberately tries to corrupt them before they've had a chance to enjoy their childhood. Anyway. Just thinking out loud here. Hope I didn't bring you down. :((

Don't give in to the fear mongers. You won't watch your family starve to death because a hailstorm devasted the harvest. You won't watch half of your town dying because of the black death. Your town won't be burned down to "capture of a strategic waypoint". To make people follow like sheep you need just one thing: fear.*) That's why it's still so popular. How many news reports about successful huge parties without casualities have you seen in the last week? How many reports about a "day in the office" where no plane crashed in? It's good that you spend more time with your family. But don't, please don't, teach your daugther to live in a world of fear. Fear is highly contagious, you know. *) guilt works as well - see Sarte "the flies". But fear is easier nowadays...

The world has always been this way. My advice, spend as much time with the people you love and care for as you can. But don't smother them with love. The world is an evil place, they have to learn this sometime - it's the only thing that will give them a fighting chance. Michael 'War is at best barbarism...Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell.' - General William Sherman, 1879

Let her go to school for fucks sake. It was the best time of my life. Away from the boring sameness of home. A chance to learn and to play with friends your own age. My 6 years old son doesn't say this too me, but I know he feels the same. He loves his time at school too much. As for you or you child being killed. Fuck, it could happen anywhere anytime. It's the cycle of life , you known , from immemorial times to today , in the past we could easily be killed by the Plague , Leper or on the Crusades , people easily died from the most various diseases in the *civilized world* , truly the planet earth never was a safe place to born , but the human race survived , even battling each other , we survived , big deal, nowadays on the tecnology era , with better machines , the medicine much more developed , with many things to increase our quality of life ,we are victims of our own evolution , with nuclear weapons who could easily wipe out an city or a state , but the keypoint is that we survive , no matter the mistakes we made , the crimes that we commit against the nature , since we are the parasites of the planet earth , who cares ... live day by day, take care of your loved ones , don't put your children in a cage, show how is the world and what could be the paper he/she could represent on the future's society, don't worry too much , let life follow their normal lifecycle, afterall is what we all do , and we aren't so bad , are we ? Cheers,João Vaz And if your dream is to care for your family, to put food on the table, to provide them with an education and a good home, then maybe suffering through an endless, pointless, boring job will seem to have purpose. I don't think there was ever a time in history when the world was a happy place. There have always been mad men out there who would kill you just because your skin was a different color, or if you prayed to a different god, or if you had food/water/money/land/information/a beautiful wife and they wanted it. Unless of course you believe in the Creation story. I suppose Adam and Eve had it pretty sweet for a while there.

I never said I've been keeping her home from school constantly did I? I keep her home with me maybe one day a month, sometimes 2 if she's not feeling well. Be careful you're not assuming too much before you start swearing at someone. And like I said above. I'm not particularly worried about death. I'm worried about the amount and the quality of time I get to spend with loved ones between now and then.
