What Microsoft did right

Got up today, read my e-mail, browsed some news site. The computer didn't crash, there were no apparent issues. All of this while using Windows 8. So, until such time as I can find the time to write my own operating system and browser, I will continue to use what I have - Windows 8. And griping about what I don't like is wasted breath... so, I shant.
While you are there, I give insight from the other side. My Linux mint (only) based laptop is the only working computer (for now) that I currently have. And I'm not working now, I am taking a huge holiday (as an unemployed) so it is time to play some games. What Linux has for good graphics games - OpenGL: it is open, it is great, it is highly unused. Most of the titles are not ported to Linux, so be happy with your Windows and its DirectX technology. The Linux computer is only usable to work and nothing else but work.

Last week I bought a lovely new Pavilion 15; I didn't complain either. I had it blatted to Ubuntu 14.04 within the half hour. This morning I Facebooked, read the online papers(the free ones, obviously), wrote a humorous Python script in Idle(the free Python interpreter), using Python 3.4(pre installed), to amuse my pals in the US when they wake up while I'm at work here in the UK. Last night I used a (free) IRC client to catch up with some people from RedHat who were willing to help me with a (free) virtualisation solution at work, and the night before I rebuilt my Windows-compatible .NET projects using (free) MonoDevelop and got them working on my Ubuntu desktop in 15 minutes flat. All while listening to music from (free) Rhythmbox. To paraphrase Crocodile Dundee, "Windows; you can live on it, but it tastes like sh!t".
Signed up to be a Microsoft developer for free Received every piece of software ever made by Microsoft for free. When I log onto Windows 8.1 the start menu is there without doing anything. Right away my facebook notifications show on the start screen. Right away weather, sports, and news all show on the start screen. Then I go into the Bing News app now called MSN news (which is a data mining app - this provides news from 100s of sources I choose) Afterwards I use Visual Studio Ultimate - provided free And you wouldn't have had to waste the 15 minutes when Windows 8 was already installed - just saying :D

When you consider the amount of vitriol that is normally spewed into the lounge, generally aimed at Microsoft by developers that purportedly use Microsoft products, I make a conscious decision to post a postitive comment in the hopes that it would somewhat alter the balance. Or, at least give people pause to think... One simple act may not change the world, but it can change someones world.
I nominate you for the upcoming Nobel Prize for Peace ;P But really though, I agree with you on this. How is it in a world of grays so many people see black or white (usually black)?

And I didn't have to sign up for anything or anybody. I'm a salaried Nomad. I guess it all comes down to choices. How long does it take to install Visual Studio Ultimate? :-D

Incidentally, I was told by somebody connected that the reason they're going to 10 is because millions of people have applications and code containing functionality based on "Win 9X" macros, which would of course crash all the legacy (and not so legacy) applications as soon as they detected Windows 9. :laugh:

$0 income last 2 years - spent doing whatever I want, though I've been using the time to write experimental software. 2 and a half minutes from ISO on hard drive.

Did you get the HDD drive free as well? Liar incidentally, not lair. And no, I do not lie, as you would find if you you stopped being a Microsofty and looked at the big, good world out there.

Incidentally, I took an hour or two to build the system(80GB of Music from backup, that sort of thing). The 15 minutes was from when I decided to get my applications running on the new computer to having them running. No SSD, no lie. Oh, and while we're being completely honest, there is one fault with 14.04 on this PC; Broadcom doesn't supply the exact Linux driver for my BCM43142 dual wifi/bluetooth card, so the distro reverts to an alternative driver which really isn't very good. Still, 14.10 is out in two weeks; I've checked, it has updated BCM drivers, which *may* improve things. If not, they will get around to it eventually. I buy brand, spanking new hardware very rarely, so I'm in it for the long term anyway.
