I have a little Stihl with a 12 inch bar but from time to time a big job presents itself like cutting down to ground level a tree stump that's about 4 feet tall and 3 feet round. This stump is a conglomeration of multiple trunks that grew together. I am a part time weekend "gardener" and from time I have these tasks. I went to price a Stihl with a 36inch bar and couldn't believe the price. What size saw, bar and make do you use and for what types of tasks.

Best bet would be to rent one.

Thanks for reply, The problem is, it's $80 bucks to rent one with a 20inch bar (can't rent one much bigger) and it is usually in questionable operational state when I rent it, and I have needed one several times.

Create your own is another option.

The only reason I left that out are there are not to many people that know how to make on. I thought about it though! I worked with an Electrical Eng. a long time ago that took me to his Dad's basement workshop where he made combustion engines from scratch, I was amazed.

I think the suggestion to make one was spot on, so contact Clarkson at Top Gear. I am sure they could lash one up using a V8 engine. They have already done a couple of things like this before:- V8 food blender here[^] V8 rocking chair here[^] :omg:

Rent the 20" if you can and get a little creative whichever saw you end up using. It's possible to cut through 3' of trunk with a smaller saw. You just have to do it in small wedges and account for the tree leaning into the cut the deeper you go. Don't even think of trying to cut the entire front wedge all at once. On any one cut don't go deeper than half the width of the bar. This will help minimize the tree "grabbing" the bar and help you get the saw back out of the tree if it does. I cut a couple of 3' trees with an 16" saw. It took me about and hour to do each one, not counting the problem I had on the first tree. I got the saw trapped hard and had to use a come-along between to the two trees to get the saw out. The second one went much smoother.

you could check and see what they have that you could just change to a longer bar and chain whne you needed it. Some support diferent sizes but I haven't had the need to look into it much.

You might be able to get a longer bar and chain, for your current saw.
