I installed Visual Studio Community Edition this weekend...
-
...and I'm very happy with it! It's basically a completely free amalgamation of all their Express editions, with full plugin and add-in support. One of the first things I've done is install Visual Studio Tools for Apache Cordova[^]. Wicked stuff. [Edit] For those wondering what Visual Studio Community Edition[^] is [\Edit]
Yeah, this Visual Studio Community thing and the ASP.NET 5[^] thing, they're both just perfect. Microsoft really is going to rule the Cloud and the IDE platforms. When I was reading the blog posts for ASP.NET stuff, and all other things ASP.NET now offers, less compilation, cross-platform, I really felt a little proud; not little obviously. Using these two, Microsoft has really shocked the competitors, the support for Android emulator (infact the creation of...) and the best thing is that it is for Free! Yayy.. In ASP.NET, what I like is the JSON format for the settings and configurations. I really hated that XML; no offence to XML, but JSON seems fair to me. The new package IntelliSense and many more features make it "Still the best IDE". But, still in the preview mode. I will wait until the public release is out to download.

I checked it - I can say it's more like a professional edition - for free... A great step from Microsoft - the second in a month - toward the development community...

Forgive the ignorant. What was the first step? In case I missed something important (just like this community edition, which I would have missed had I not read this post).
Thanks, Milind

Wow !! Any hiccups/ issues? I have just installed VS2013 express for Web and Desktop on new laptop and haven't started using it. Shall I be uninstalling other express editions first and then install this community ?
Thanks, Milind

If you want to, I guess. Doubt it would hurt. I didn't bother though. ;P

Hi, I'm glad it's working for you ! Isn't there some difference in functionality, or limits, with the Community edition compared to a purchased VS 2013 Pro ? thanks, Bill

I don't know. :~ Haven't found any yet. The only difference is licensing, if that counts. As an individual, you can use it to create/sell whatever you want. Organizational use is limited.

My question as well. I'm running on a 90 day test license for 2013, but if I can get it for free... :)

No difference Bill, apart from the licensing terms. Major awesomeness, esp. after modifying the icons to look like VS2010. /ravi

I know lots of people do not like it anymore, but is MFC supported or even included with C++? I have never used any of the express editions because they lacked MFC.
Within you lies the power for good - Use it!
Yes, it is. /ravi
