HI, I am currently working as a Web developer and pursuing MBA part time. Now after completing MBA, I want to move into IT management side of world. From last 1-2 years, I have been providing solutions to my employer, and implementing them. My job requirement is more than a developer (Who just work on a given task). Now I have an option to change my role. What do you all suggest? Do i stick to Developer or Web consultant or Solutions Architect considering that I want to move into management side in few years time. Thanks.

It depends how you want to market yourself and what it is you really want to be doing. Even though architect sounds like you're at a higher level, I've dealt with plenty of "solutions architects" that were just systems engineers that put things together but hardly ever did any of the real work themselves (so using the title may backfire if someone considers it to be high-level but not understanding of the details). Consultant sort of implies that you're only looking for contract work, not full-time employment (not sure if that's what you're looking for). In any case, I'd stick to being specific to the type of job you're after. If you're applying for a job that specifically states "Developer" and you apply with a resume that says "Solutions Architect", guess who's not getting a call? ...goes the other way around as well... if there's a posting for a "Systems Engineer" or "Solutions Architect", they may not want a "Developer" that has very specific, yet narrow skills.

I think a title of Solutions Architect would build a better bridge to management than Developer or Consultant. An Architect usually guides developers on technical issues while a manager guides developers on more day to day or project level execution. As always, check with state level licensing boards to make sure your title does not violate any laws! In my state, you cannot use Architect, Engineer, or Doctor in your title unless you have passed the appropriate state boards.

Don't chase titles. Don't chase money. Do that which you enjoy and inspires you. Don't worry if they call you janitor, developer, king. You'll have a much more rewarding and enjoyable life, which is really the thing FTW.

What does that mean to you exactly? A consultant isn't typically going to "move into management" unless the goal is to create a consultant company. An architect might or might not be a manager but in that case it really involves wearing two hats and not really just one. Becoming a project manager as a goal might be more on line to "move into management" although a team lead would work as well. Keep in mind of course that it general it is going to be easier to "move into management" in a larger companies although probably not within one large company. Thus one might move into a team lead position at one large company, do that for a while, then get a job at another company as a project manager thus moving up more quickly than versus staying with the original company.

AndyInUK congratulations on obtaining your MBA. Now if you really wish to succeed in IT you ought do a Masters in Information Technology (MInfoTech), but you will find that much harder than your MBA. You could do it part time(about 2 years) Through that process you will be able to find your way. Regards GregJF
