Do you use your blog for private stuff?
-
I guess, first off, do you even have a blog? And if so, do you use it for private things, like important notes, etc? Reason being, it just occurred to me that the notes on how to backup a Postgres database, transfer it to my PC, and restore it locally, are commands I always have to do a "history" on to see how I did it. Figured, I might as well use my blog but keep the post private to retain these little workflow gems. Marc

That's what I use CP for. :-D And, remember that every CP member has a blog on their profile page.

Nope. I would never find the time to work on it.

I occasionally upload stuff to my web-site (without linking to it from within the site -- pretty much the same as the "private" thing you mention), if I want to let other people have access to it (e.g. I've done that so that I can post links to pictures here), but never for stuff that's for me personally. I have been known to use skydrive, google drive, and dropbox for that, though, particularly if I only have a phone or tab with me.

I do have a blog or two - but rarely get around to posting to them (and I lost the entire contents of the one I did use regularly in a fit of stupidity) For stuff of interest to me, though, I use evernote. worth its weight. I can always copy to a blog if I want to make it public (and copy to it from blog, for that matter) so I treat Evernote as my local scratchpad - and sometimes pretty stuff up and post it

Well, you can definitely trust the internet as a big chunk of it is already consisting of "private" things..

I started keeping personal and work notes as private blogs a few years ago. It worked great until it got to be a pain, then...months go by with no postings. :omg: I've also tried OneNote as a journal of sorts...again, with the same results. :( Just today, I was thumbing through a couple of legal pads and a few hundred pages of loose notes to find something important to the task at hand...never did find what I was looking for either... Back to the point, any method/mechanism you can use to store notes is only as effective as your commitment to using it. Something searchable would obviously be a benefit, unlike my 'legal pad' solution to keeping notes!

Are you not a developer? Why not create a web app or a desktop app that you can custom to 100% your needs where you can allow for search criteria and tags etc etc..? :-\

Me: Google, What is a blog?
Google wrote:
blog bläɡ/ noun 1. a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style. verb verb: blog; 3rd person present: blogs; past tense: blogged; past participle: blogged; gerund or present participle: blogging 1. add new material to or regularly update a blog. "it's about a week since I last blogged"
So my answer would be: facebook, codeproject, linkedin. (not very useful in your case, unless the CP hamsters can conjure up "private blog space" or something) alternatively, as a knowledge base consider a wiki-page like concept perhaps?

I do have a blog, but no private stuff (yet) and probably never will. Actually, I don't have any personal notes on how to do stuff, except from the projects I created to test one thing or another. For shortcuts, commands, articles etc. that I need to remember I usually create a document and email them to myself. And then I never look at them again :D

Some have already said this, but I would not keep these "gems" private. I would either post them here (somewhere) or on you blog, as "public". If you find these notes helpful, I am sure many other will as well. Share the knowledge.

Yes, I have a blog, not that it has anyone following it. I get excited when my views for a week goes above 5. But, my main reason for blogging is not to garner a troupe of followers. I started it because I like to write. Also, like a lot of people, I have the notion that something I write will be of value to someone, some day. What I've come to realize is I'm that someone. My blog is where I put all the nifty stuff I've thought through, and some I haven't. (Those are called "Drafts". I find writing my blog gets me to understand more what I am writing about. I also find my blog is a good way to go back and find out what I figured out in the past.
