I believe that Mother's Day is celebrated on different dates in different countries. This article[^] is in Swedish, so I'll translate the most important part:

Mother's Day is celebrated in most countries in the world, but on very different dates, in Sweden, we celebrate Mother's Day on the last Sunday in May just like Morocco and France for instance. In the USA, Finland and Denmark amongst others, the day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, and in Norway, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of February.

According to this, the date for celebration of Mother's Day has something to do with when the flowers (the traditional Mother's Day gift) are in bloom in the given countries... (Note: I didn't write the text, so I give no guarantee for the accuracy of any of the information) No doubt, other countries not mentioned in this text can have their own celebration dates... What I don't understand, though, is why the OP chooses to congratulate his mother in THIS forum...

after the quote-block noted that in Norway it's the second Sunday in February. Do I have the climate (or hemisphere) confused, or is that when the first flowers defrost?

As I said (and that's partly why I said it): I didn't write the text, so I give no guarantee for the accuracy of any of the information I completely agree that it sounds stupid when coming to Norway, but it might be accurate for other countries, what do I know (or care for that matter  )? There's always someone who has to be a smart-ass, isn't there? And I don't like that when it's not me...

Giving your mother some nice flowers and a card once a year isn't that bad, is it? And: Everyday is Children's day, not Mother's day! :)

IMHO, this is geography-dependent. I stayed with my mother till her passing a year ago. So, nothing like flowers and a card once a year; she was with me every day, so what flowers are we talking about. Till her end, she planted flower saplings and grew flowers in our small garden; there were flowers every day - jasmine, rose, petunia, balsam, ipomea, parijata*, nandi-battalu*, etc. * Local names of these flowers. I live in the southern part of India, and this situation is quite common here, but changing slowly.

after the quote-block noted that in Norway it's the second Sunday in February. Do I have the climate (or hemisphere) confused, or is that when the first flowers defrost?

Keep in mind that there is a massive flower market in Amsterdam that imports flowers from all over the globe for distribution throughout Europe. Yes, I too found that unbelievable - but apparently it's true! Maybe Mark or other CPians in the Netherlands can confirm. So: Countries in Europe can celebrate any special day with flowers, any day of the year! :)
