What are we driving? (AKA The car is the star)

Caterham is indeed serious kit. Bit extreme for everyday driving, but I would not say no :-D My ideal car though would be a Mitsub EVO VII.

Caterham? Pah! You want one of these -> http://www.tigerracing.com/cars/z100main.htm[^] Its a Lotus 7 type car, just like a Caterham but with two, thats right count 'em, 2 Kawasaki ZX12 1200cc Bike engines in it. 190bhp per engine. 4wd, one engine powers the front wheels, the other powers the rears. 0-60mph = 2.8 seconds on normal road legal tires. Now thats a real car. You can keep your Ferrari's. As for me, I've got a Seat Ibiza Cupra 1.8 Turbo. Its a real boy racers car. I feel like I should wear a base ball cap backwards before I get in it. Caterham did something similar, also two bike engines in the back on their Superlight chassis. Not sure of the figures, was in Autocar awhile back. It has to be FUN to drive. Not so much about top speed as about handling and acceleration, chuckability. Also for us normal Joes it has to be able to drive down to the shops and get a bootful of groceries too. Try that in a Ferrari. Another reason I love the EVO, can take four adults and a boot of luggage and still kick arse.

Currently a Volvo V70 (a must with 2 big dogs) but still dreaming of a Bugatti Veyron[^], which btw. easily eats all these wanna-look-like-an-old-racer-cars for breakfast (1001 HP, double V8/16cyl/64val, 1250Nm, 4 turbo chargers, 0-420 in 13.2 sec). Or, maybe just a Corvette one day :)

Then you will see just who is the one eating breakfast. Or just wait for a rainy day and watch your pretty car's windscreen get smeared in spray as either of the above leave it for dead. Top speed is not that important IMO. Still... the Veyron is very impressive of course :-D And that Volvo of yours is very nice, dogs or not :)

Veyron! Pah! You want one of these ->...Never mind, I've done that reply once today. The Veyron is very nice, amd that engine is just increadible, but I have to say that the Caterham (or even better, the z100WR) would have it make it look foolish on pretty much any road in Britain. We dont have enough room to do 420kph, well, not for long anyway. And you'd have every cop in the country looking for you if you got caught. Its Acceleration all the way in my opinion. 4wd, wide tires all round and a bucket load of torque. You can't beat open topped sports cars. Pete

Hahahaha, well in that case I prefer to be in a closed car with a instead of a rolling bath tub, I dont like it wet. Yet, the acceleration of the Veyron IS impressive especially when you compare it with the others: 0-60 in 2.8 but 0-100 in 7, there you can already see the limits. So, these vehicles may be quick starters but when its above the 100/150 mph range they quickly get lost, while the Veyron still accelerates. Its a weird car. Either you like the design or you hate it. The technical specifications are rather a minor detail for a car whose price tag has 7 digits in US$. Anyway, for everyday use a Volvo V70 is quite a nice choice. I am happy with it. Unfortunately I cant take it with me to Brazil, and buying one there is dangerous and expensive. Probably I'll end up with some rather common car like a Chevy Blazer which is just cheap there.

As I wrote in my previous reply - up to 100 Mph the z100WR and similar accelerate faster but above they are lost. I had the luck to see one of these Veyrons in real on the street during a show. I was amazed by the rather low sound compared to some Ferrari's. I think that there is no (public) road on earth where you can drive 420. Neither with or without police :)

Me - a 2000 Ford Focus 1.6 (nice car, but not at the super-car levels that you guys are talking about!) However, my brother is driving a 1976 (I think) Triumph Spitfire Mk2 - in fact, it's the very Triumph Spitfire that is on the cover of this month's "Classic Car" magazine in the UK. It's his car, but it ain't him driving it on the cover of the magazine, just a pair of models (who really aren't very attractive for models...)

I'm driving - er - riding a 1993 Harley-Davidson FLSTC, customized by yours truly in a style I call "retro-custom". I've customized it in such a way as to resemble a late 60's Panhead 'Glide. Pic is here[^] When it's just too damn hot or cold to ride, I move to my secondary vehicle - a 1998 Buick Park Avenue Ultra painted "diamond white" (white with a platinum pearl overcoat). My wife drives a 2000 Ford F-150 pickup. If I was gonna go out and buy a new car, I think I'd have to look REAL hard at the 2005 Mustang (or a new Park Avenue Ultra) ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

Ireland's kind of a long way from High Wycombe[^] for the amount of time normally needed to restore a Triumph! Although yours doesn't look like it's in particularly bad condition. Ever considered converting it into a Gitfire?

I got a pickup truck. A 1998 GMC Sonoma. Plenty of room in the back for beer, ammunition, and a couple of deer should I hit a couple grazing along the highway. The rifles stow behind the seat neatly, or in the rack on the back window, so I can get at them if I need to pass someone on the road. Currently a 94 Chev Cavalier RS (Z24 without ground effects). Being *severely* tempted/lured by an Impreza WRX.;P (no drool icon) Just wish they weren't so bleeding expensive (35K CDN) Although they can't keep 'em on the lot long enough for me to test drive one, so I suppose I'm lucky in a way.
