Windows 10 annoyances so far

Cortana isn't available in Canada. It's available in the US and UK, but not Canada. This is par for the course - so much so that I no longer get angry - just sad. Resolution? No issues my end.

Ugh, I meant Aero.

1. You can't drag an address from Edge onto the desktop to create a shortcut. Dumb omission. 2. Connecting to a VPN now requires 4 clicks (including having the "Settings" dialog open) instead of two clicks almost in-place) 3. No areaAero. I know it's in there, buried, but so far I've not had any luck enabling it. ...and if that's all I can find to complain about then something went right somewhere.

Well you're not missing anything. I live in the US and apparently it is availability is limited to special installs :)
Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet. The interesting thing about software is it can not reproduce, until it can.
Check you have the correct speech and language packs installed for your region. That's the usual issue if you can get Cortana in your country.

I wonder why Canada (i.e. Canadian people) has so much limitations (Quebec overall)... I was twice there (BC) and I felt in love for that country... US are envy, maybe?

Have you gotten Cortona to work? I have yet to get an install to have it work properly. No sound, can't hear me etc. Also it does not dock proper to a large screen. Maybe windows was always this way but try this out and be annoyed. Hook up mobile device to larger monitor. Notice the resolution is wonky and restart. BAM! Now you have the full resolution and things are grand... Or are they. Unhook from larger monitor... BAM looks like crap on mobile.

Doesn't seem to work with multiple monitors: I have 5 on a 6 monitor display card, working fine on Win 8.1 After upgrade can only see/enable two of them. Had to revert to 8.1. On tablet/laptop hybrid: works well, but annoying that selection of WiFi networks has become more difficult (more clicks, not all settings in one place), also that number of recently used items takes more space for far fewer. Likewise, icons in system tray take more room, and often disappear entirely, only coming back after resizing tray. Quite difficult to switch to desktop mode (no tile!) when in tablet mode and you want to keep hybrid in tablet shape but work on desktop (hybrid is a Yoga so can be used with KVM in tent shape - win 10 doesn't allow for this despite such configs being possible with the Surface!) Seems impossible to organise tiles properly on new start menu, so I'm going to revert to classic shell. Only serious problem so far: breaks Google Sync for Outlook, which has to be reinstalled.

What's even more laughable is that BC is a short ferry ride away from the Microsoft HQ.
The difficult may take time, the impossible a little longer.

I'd like to add a few annoyance regarding the new start menu: 0) The left pane is not wide enough and can't be resized. Both my SQL Server 2008r2 and 2014 simply show up as 'Microsoft SQL Server 20..'. I've now pinned them to the right-side 'tile' start menu and to the taskbar to get around it, still I have other programs like multiple VS where I can't see which is which. 1) Pinning to the start menu is confusing and only seemed to take effect after a reboot. 2) Removing an item from the list of 'Recently added' doesn't remove the item immediately and sometimes not at all. I still like it better than 8, but not as much as 7. :(
"Go forth into the source" - Neal Morse
Add to the list periodic failures of the indexed search for desktop apps and having to left click "open in new tab" after right clicking a link while in Edge to pull up the options list. The old IE used to accept a right click in the options list.
The difficult may take time, the impossible a little longer.

This post is pretty old in regards to the Windows 10 development cycle, but Aero Lite is still there, but this theme never had the glass effect. (Maybe I just misunderstand here something? I mean, it really depends on what are you referring to by "Aero").

No, you cannot rename them. In fact, right-click has no effect at all, there's not context menu. The whole All Apps list is built on a database rather than the file system like in the past (what's even worse is the fact that this database is limited to 512 entries, so if you got a lot of programs installed, with links and subfolders, some of them might not show up at all). This start menu is a joke.
Actually it's a bit more complicated than that ... Folders on the all apps list have no context menu and cannot be renamed (or can they? *) MS 'universal' apps have a limited context menu (pin/unpin) and cannot be renamed (or can they? **) Individual shortcuts have an extended context menu and can be renamed by going to file location and simply doing it the old fashioned way. Individual shortcuts can be moved out of a folder (found in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs) and will then take their place in the alphabetical listing accordingly. If the folder is left empty after this move it will no longer show on the All Apps list. So .... *** Yes they can! If you rename the empty folder and then drag all the shortcuts back into it it will reappear on the All Apps list in the correct alphabetical place according to its new name. ** Well, no they can't! but there's only so much good news a man can hand on in a day!

I bought a Lenovo all in one for my everyday email and surfing, and upgraded to 10. When the machine is shut down, carefully clicking shutdown on the start menu, it will restart after some random time from 4 or 5 minutes to around an hour.

Installed Windows 10 as upgrade to Windows 7 Home on my SSD having first disconnected my Windows 7 Pro drive. It took more than six hours to download and install. At first it seemed to be working OK but then the updates started. Within the first half hour it had downloaded six updates. Tried the Edge browser. Not impressed. No faster than IE and definitely not easier to use. Tried the music player. Why? Why did they bother? Oh yes. I know. They want us to buy an app to play music. Nah! Tried the news app. Good grief. How the hell do you navigate? The scroll bars keep disappearing and you have to guess where they are. What a stupid idea! Keyboard commands aren't much better. Right cursor key to scroll past the thing you are trying to read. Rubbish! Then I thought, why not put the other drive back to see if I can read the files. Ok. Seemed to be ok but then I couldn't access my folders. Locked out. Tried changing permissions but not able to, even as administrator. WTF? Switched off and had my lunch. When I switched back on it started a disk check. Apparently the Windows 7 drive was corrupted. Oh really? Cancelled the disk check and rebooted into Windows 7. Oh no! Another disk check but this time the Win10 drive was the suspect. Cancelled this disk check and continued to boot into Win 7. Everything seemed ok but no access to Win 10 files. Not surprised. Noticed a few extra recycle bins had appeared on the drive. Hmmm... Shut down and restarted into Win 10 or at least, that was what I wanted to do. The boot failed because the file system was now corrupted. Do I want to auto repair? Ok. Unable to start Windows 10 because the file system is corrupted. Auto repair? Ok. And round it went, at least six times before I said something on the lines of "to hell with it". Re-installed windows 7 in less than 30 minutes. Everything OK again. Overall impression of Windows 10 - I don't like the look of it. Characterless blocks with cheap looking fonts. What happened to the nicely crafted borders that came with earlier versions? Windows 10 looks like early versions of Linux but with more saturated colours. Generally un-impressed with the appearance. User interface is not as easy to use as older Windows versions. That's not because it's new or different, I have been playing with the pre-release versions for a while now. Sorry Microsoft. Why would I want to replace a solid, reliable, easy to use OS with this nasty looking plastic imitation?

The short version of my current Weven VPN experience in 20 easy steps is: 0) Click start. 1) Click on the Cisco VPN app pinned on the start menu (because I can never remember WTE it's called to use search). 2) Click on the Connect button on the app which opens by the tray. 3) Realize I forgot my VPN password. 4) Start a new explorer instance. 5) Double click on My Documents. 6) Find the GPG encrypted file the VPN password is in. 7) Double click on it. 8) Wait for GPG to open. 9) Click on Decrypt. 10) Enter my password. 11) Click OK. 12) Open the file. 13) Enter the password and token from my RSA key into the VPN app. 14) Click connect. 15) Wait. 16) Click OK to dismiss the welcome banner I get sent by my employer. 17) Close the password file. 18) Right click on the decrypted password file. 19) Select secure erase from the context menu. It gets even more fun if my VPN password has expired and I need to add steps to change it including waiting a minute for the next RSA token number and then update an re-encrypt the password file. And you're whining about a mere four clicks. :(( PS I found a major bug in your markdown implementation. If I turn it on and replace the

I'd wager it has something to do with the law differences between countries. In this case, I would immediately assume there are differences in privacy laws since Cortana is doing a lot of listening and transmitting of personal or in-home communication.
Gonna love even more Canada (and less Cortana) ;P

I've had some weird resolution issues, but I guess that's what I get for having a 4K monitor... :sigh:
The United States invariably does the right thing, after having exhausted every other alternative. -Winston Churchill America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between. -Oscar Wilde Wow, even the French showed a little more spine than that before they got their sh*t pushed in.[^] -Colin Mullikin
Curious what you use the 4k Monitor for. I haven't seen too much content or content providers that would justify the purchase of it.

Hmm did not think of that. I will check into it. Thank you :)
