I use AV because it works. Unless you have a totally left-field OS which is not targeted by hackers, spammers and phishers, you are a fool not to protect your data. Every popular OS - Apple, *ix Win* - is being targeted and not having a decent defense in place will result in a breach. If you're lucky you'll lose all your data, if you're not then it'll be all your money as well. Go on, choose.

The main way virus's are spread these days is by drive by installs on trusted websites that have been compromised. If you browse the web and don't have AV protection, you're begging to be pwned without warning while visiting a site that is normally safe.

Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason? Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful? --Zachris Topelius Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. You like that? You go right on staring at it. I prefer looking at galaxies. -- Sarah Hoyt

Exactly which company are you referring to? I get 5 results when filtering by "Computer Software" and none of them seem to be antivirus companies...

No, haven't used a scanner in 10 years. Haven't had a virus either.

If you are the type that runs code without knowing what it does, open executables, then yes, it works "most of the time". For companies it is different; they'll need to have one. Especially large companies would come under fire if they lost all their data over an old and outdated virus. And in large companies there is always a manager that opens the executable. Always.

Let me rephrase; there is no process running without my knowledge, and any communication is logged (using WinPCap). Virusses require resources and rights to spread :)

Because most people aren't like us; they believe the "internets" to be safe. They will open spam messages, they will look at naughty or cat pictures on the internet, they will run programs received by emails to make they computer safer without thinking about it.

                I'd rather be phishing!

If you need to scan to see whether something is infected, you are already behind the curve and at risk. Update your hostsfile, check the startup folder, turn on UAC and DEP..

Not the same; You cannot guarantee no one is in the house if you don't know what windows are open, which doors are locked - but if you close all, then someone would have to tear down a wall to get in there. :)

No, except once a year to do a scan just in case (but it never finds anything significant). Apart from that time I don't even have it installed, because it's AV is a sneaky bastard itself, worming itself where it shouldn't go and eating up your resources. Meanwhile my dad has AV and still gets viruses that I have to remove manually. Lame old viruses that should be trivial for any AV, not the newest NSA-grade malware. So if it works then evidently it only works a bit.

Two times in my life I did not use an antivirus. The only two times I got virusses in my life. First time I had a 640 Kbps ADSL (the fastest connection a home user could have in 2004 here), opened WinMX (first time user of any P2P) and in 5 minutes I had a dialer on my pc. Way to go! Reset and restore. Second time I was smarter, 2010, with a GPRS pen-drive at 32 kbps, I had to visit ONE trusted site, three pages: first one to open gamefaqs, second the search results, third the walkthrough: got virus. That PC was never connected to the Internet. So yes, I keep a licensed antivirus at all times. The other experiences of virusses I had were related to the Pc of my family, often with freeware antivirus or outright cracked ones.

There's this movie, I forgot which one, but these guys are trying to rob a bank or something. The crooks use your reasoning so their solution, make sure they're already inside when all doors and windows get locked. The next morning, when everything opens up, they simply walk out with the loot :)

The equivalent thereof would be to have my installation medium infected; something rather uncommon. Yes, we've had an original Win95-CD that was infected once - but the chance of an infection is kinda "low"; at that point a scanner hardly helps, there is never a 100% guarantee :)

Two words - Minecraft Mods. My darling children do insist on downloading them and installing them - complete with all the viruses, browser hijackers, etc, that they come with. That's why their machines have AV software and Adware apps running.

If you need to scan to see whether something is infected, you are already behind the curve and at risk. Update your hostsfile, check the startup folder, turn on UAC and DEP..

Wrong, the AV and Firewall are there in addition to managing access into [and out of] the machine. With kids it is easier to have the AV nannying in the background then it is to keep cleaning the shyte off their machines.

Not the same; You cannot guarantee no one is in the house if you don't know what windows are open, which doors are locked - but if you close all, then someone would have to tear down a wall to get in there. :)

Does the house even exist if you're not there though?

How do you know so much about swallows? Well, you have to know these things when you're a king, you know.
