Except it is the 'reviewer' who gives your phone number, and you don't sign up but an automated profile is created... ... a profile YOU cannot remove.

Must be, how else could peeple[probably TM][^] have ever seen the light of day? I can see it now, create a 'review' of someone, let us say 'Dave from Luton' and rate him low with the comment that he's a fascist loony out for personal gain and when he disputes it you have the poor guy over a proverbial barrel. Lawsuits? Nah, everyone will be sooooo nice.

Maybe that's just the lite version the pro version allows you to hire peeple to say nice things about you, at an exorbitant rate of course.

Just ignore it - they're hoping people will get upset enough to respond. If no one does the haters will get bored and move on to the next bile inducing site.

Yeah, I know - but it'll get stamped on pretty hard as soon as "someone important" gets reviewed badly. Obama, or Nicolas Cage for example.

Hm. The white pages have always done that and as far as I know, I never gave my consent. Perhaps it is inherent in requesting a phone number that you give your consent for some things.

Where? I said that phone numbers have been in the white pages forever. I don't have a cell phone and also haven't used the whitepages since the internet came around so I don't know what they are doing regarding cell phones. Don't care either.

Yup, just as I suspected. Here, let me give you the full lyrics. THE SIDESTEP From : "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas" (Carol Hall) Charles Durning Fellow Texans, I am proudly standing here to humbly see. I assure you, and I mean it- Now, who says I don't speak out as plain as day? And, fellow Texans, I'm for progress and the flag- long may it fly. I'm a poor boy, come to greatness. So, it follows that I cannot tell a lie. Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep, now they see me now they don't- I've come and gone and, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step, cut a little swathe and lead the people on. Now my good friends, it behooves me to be solemn and declare, I'm for goodness and for profit and for living clean and saying daily prayer. And now, my good friends, you can sleep nights, I'll continue to stand tall. You can trust me, for I promise, I shall keep a watchful eye upon ya'll... Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep, now they see me now they don't- I've come and gone and, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step, cut a little swathe and lead the people on. Now, Miss Mona, I don't know her, though I've heard the name, oh yes. But, of course I've no close contact, so what she is doing I can only guess. And now, Miss Mona, she's a blemish on the face of that good town. I am taking certain steps here, someone somewhere's gonna have to close her down. Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep, now they see me now they don't- I've come and gone and, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step, cut a little swathe and lead the people on. Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep... And, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step... Cut a little swathe and lead the people on.

It would seem they've taken the Peeple web site offline. In a somewhat related story, I read an article this morning that claimed financial institutions may start looking beyond your personal credit rating when determining eligibility for new credit - like for a car or home loan, credit card etc.. They will apparently also examine the credit rating of your Facebook friends and LinkedIn associates. It is further alleged that they will examine your phone records and do the same for the people with whom you have direct interaction. (Ostensibly authorized by a clause in the application you sign.) All this is apparently done in an attempt to assess risk by examining the "kind" of people with whom you associate. Employers already look at your Facebook page when you reach a certain stage in the hiring process.
