What would be the one, reasonable, change that could be made to your place of work to make it better? Particularly looking forward to Griff's response to this? I've asked the question, but don't have a ready answer for myself.

Walls was what I was thinking too. Although not because of Soccer. Currently trying not to listen to a conversation two pods of desks over about potatoes.

WALLS. Open spaces SUCK. Especially if it's choke-full of soccerfags soccer enthusiasts and there are at least 4 matches per week.

Wow! If I remember correctly this is the same workspace where the employees are allowed to access no more than approximately 7 specific websites. Am I wrong? But watching the telly is fine as the capo is into sports??

Walls are good. Doors help as well. I have both: four walls, a window, and a door which is only closed to keep noise down (either mine while Herself is sleeping, or when I'm trying to concentrate and she is swearing at the TV...) Cubes don't work for me: too much noise, too many people walking past, too easy to interrupt the thought processes.

We do have a big, open stairway but most of the staff scuttle up and down the fire escape in the centre of the building for some reason. It retains farts for days. This is a stairway[^] (third picture).

I have three colleagues that talk CONSTANTLY, and loud. They are administratives - they have brief bursts of work then nothing for days - and they totally break concentration, especially on hard algorythmic problems. When they have nothing to say they go on for days repeating every few seconds a selection sentences of the last B-movie or Internet phenomenon they watched. Plus one of them has the abhorrent habit of repeating hte last word he heard, so if someone is answering the pohne he usually repeat the last word of each sentence. Plus the technocal assistance, which is made mostly on the phone, is in the same and only open space with the developers and administrative employees... Total chaos. I bought boxes of earplugs... and if the boss sees me using earplugs I risk disciplinary troubles. X|

Bonuses for the non-production staff. My suggestion is take 1% (or whatever) from the bonuses they give the production staff and give it to the people who allow production to make money. We are treated as an after thought. Production will get subs for lunch, we get: "Oh, production is done with the lunch, you can come and get what you want if anything is left."

You remember perfectly. No, the capo is absent almost 4 days a week :D and he has his own office... carved at the extremes of the room there are offices with glass walls. No noise passes through and he can watch each and every one of us simply turning up his head. Usually when he's "in office" he sleeps or spends 3-4 hours at the nearby cafè then takes leave.

They don't watch the TV in office but talk about the match of the previous evening. 8 hours straight. Violent thoughts arise...

No; that won't work for me. When I was in college I worked in a place that had been a stately old house -- it even had narrow servants' stairways and all. It had a curved main stairway and carrying heavy equipment (LasetJet III, etc.) was problematic. Nowadays I'd just get dizzy going around the curves.

When I started, we had a coffee pot: regular or decaf - simple. Now, we have a Keurig. Bring back the coffee pot.. longer brew time on a per unit brew basis, but no lineup waiting for a cup to brew, heat the water, etc. But, I'm happy to have free coffee either way.

A supply of South Indian filter coffee, instead of some exotic foreign flavour. Especially, since my workplace is in Southern India.

What would be the one, reasonable, change that could be made to your place of work to make it better? Particularly looking forward to Griff's response to this? I've asked the question, but don't have a ready answer for myself.

Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

Realistic: Move my desk from its current location (middle of a 60-cube farm) to a lab, along with the rest of my group. It would be nice to have peace and quiet. Purchasing is next to our current location in the middle 40 acres, and they're always on the phone. Idealistic: Having software engineering concerns and priorities given the same credence as mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering. When you work for a hardware company, software is always free, quick, and easy. "Can't you just add a popup?" is everyone's favorite solution to every problem . It comes down to a simple matter of respect, which we don't get.
