I always disable that option on explorer windows, as it drives me nuts, for example, I end up thinking that "foo.exe" is the application when it's actually "foo.exe.config" I prefer to see exactly what the file name is rather than have to move my eyeballs over to the "Type" column. What about you? Marc

I also immediately disable that option, for the same reasons.

It is one of the first things I do when setting up a Windows PC (even when it is not mine). Not only to know like you what kind of file it is but also for security reasons.

Same thing. It's normally one of the first things I change (even on other people's computer if they ask me to fix something ;) ) I really don't understand why hiding extensions is the default...

I remember when I was a kid and the first time I came upon a friends computer where file extension was hidden. Really confused the heck out of me when I was trying to crack patch a game on his computer. I cant see any use in hiding file extension.

Another alternative is to skip Explorer. I moved to Total Commander ages ago and never looked back.

Same here - I do not look at the 'Type' column at all, only at the extension...

No way! I not only hide extensions, but I hide filenames too! Just give me a funny-looking icon to happily double-click... Because I totally trust MS's built-in antivirus to keep my computer clean! Seriously though... Yeah... I think all geeks disable that "hide extensions" garbage. Programs can mess with file associations to change what shows in the "Type" column, but the file extension itself never changes.

I am another one who sets my computer to always display all extensions. I hate not knowing what a file really is.

Just because the code works, it doesn't mean that it is good code.

Ya, another 'feature' by MS. You really have to wonder if they actually try this stuff before the publish it.

If it's not broken, fix it until it is

I always disable that option on explorer windows, as it drives me nuts, for example, I end up thinking that "foo.exe" is the application when it's actually "foo.exe.config" I prefer to see exactly what the file name is rather than have to move my eyeballs over to the "Type" column. What about you? Marc

Same here. I always want to see ALL extensions and for my Administrator account I want to see all the hidden/system files as well. I do give my regular working account power user rights since I don't trust myself enough to do general stuff with full admin rights. :) Cheers!

The kind of people who hide extensions of well known types are the kind who hide bodies in their basement.

Same with me, how can you associate an application if you don't know extension? i know this is a Fringe case but none the less.
