Do you hide extensions of known types?

Same thing. It's normally one of the first things I change (even on other people's computer if they ask me to fix something ;) ) I really don't understand why hiding extensions is the default...

Same here - I do not look at the 'Type' column at all, only at the extension...

No way! I not only hide extensions, but I hide filenames too! Just give me a funny-looking icon to happily double-click... Because I totally trust MS's built-in antivirus to keep my computer clean! Seriously though... Yeah... I think all geeks disable that "hide extensions" garbage. Programs can mess with file associations to change what shows in the "Type" column, but the file extension itself never changes.

Same here. I always want to see ALL extensions and for my Administrator account I want to see all the hidden/system files as well. I do give my regular working account power user rights since I don't trust myself enough to do general stuff with full admin rights. :) Cheers!

First I show extensions, then I hide the waste of space "Type" column, then I change the column order to show size before time-stamp, then I sort by time-stamp descending so that the most recent files are at the top then I set that standard to all directories on all disks. Done.

Another alternative is to skip Explorer. I moved to Total Commander ages ago and never looked back.

Agreed - unfortunately, I have to help setup up lots of computers for my client when we do an install, so I have to deal with Explorer. Marc

I used to rename lots of MP3 files (they HAD to be in a correct format or my brain couldn't cope ;p) and then I preferred no extensions, as renaming is a lot easier when not worrying about extensions. I never really needed extensions anyway, so I always had that option on. Then I became a developer and turned it on after about a week. Extensions are so much more important when you're actually doing work...
