Do you hide extensions of known types?

Ah... that helps explains why, when opening files, they offer the option to "Always perform this action when handling files of this type" It would be a shame if I cut the life short of a malicious executable. All lives matter! :)

Like you, I almost always disable that "feature". As a programmer I think it's important to know exactly what types of files you're dealing with, if indeed they actually have a file extension. Not sure about the history of this so-called feature, but I think it dates back to the days of Windows 95 when Uncle Bill (as I like to sarcastically refer to Microsoft) wanted to make all PCs easily accessible for the relative no-nothing user. It's not Microsoft's most annoying feature, but it's up there. Almost as irritating as the (thankfully) now defunct Microsoft Office Assistant, which in my view was a contradiction in terms on a global scale.
Win98, 95 didn't have that option.

not just tell me the extensions. But tell me where the hidden files are. Oh and the system files. YES I do want/NEED to know where they are. I have had some real issues in not knowing a file was where it was supposed to be. And yes I want the ext. I actually use text not the little icon picture over there. And furthermore I want a menu and I want windows 98 SE. That last was almost a truth. The first part was certainly true.

I want my menu. Yes I'm talking to you Explorer, and to you Firefox. Return my menu unharmed and I promise I will be merciful and forgiving.

I unhide extensions on every computer I touch, I don't care if it's mine or not. This "feature" was a boon the virus industry. ClickMe.exe... It's right up there with book burning. Keeping people stupid is not a good strategy.

Hah! That's the first thing that I change on a new PC... then I take a screenshot of the desktop, set it as the desktop background, and auto-hide the taskbar. :-D

Same thing. It's normally one of the first things I change (even on other people's computer if they ask me to fix something ;) ) I really don't understand why hiding extensions is the default...

It is the default because average Joe User doesn't know what the extensions mean. And face it, there are more Joe Users than developers by at least three orders of magnitude (if not more).

Another alternative is to skip Explorer. I moved to Total Commander ages ago and never looked back.
Life is too shor
Same here, I only use Explorer on computers I don't have ownership of. TotalCmd helps me in everyday work so much, I was very happy when I discovered my company has a license.
