I always disable that option on explorer windows, as it drives me nuts, for example, I end up thinking that "foo.exe" is the application when it's actually "foo.exe.config" I prefer to see exactly what the file name is rather than have to move my eyeballs over to the "Type" column. What about you? Marc

I unhide extensions on every computer I touch, I don't care if it's mine or not. This "feature" was a boon the virus industry. ClickMe.exe... It's right up there with book burning. Keeping people stupid is not a good strategy.

It is on my list of required changes when setting up any pc. If you are just a home user, do it manually. If you are in an IT department, make it part of your image or a setting as part of your OS Deployment process.

Of course not. Otherwise I would have forty files all named 'test'

Hah! That's the first thing that I change on a new PC... then I take a screenshot of the desktop, set it as the desktop background, and auto-hide the taskbar. :-D

On a new Windows PC my first steps are to switch some settings like this and also "Hide System Files and Folders"...

Press F1 for help or google it. Greetings from Germany

Same thing. It's normally one of the first things I change (even on other people's computer if they ask me to fix something ;) ) I really don't understand why hiding extensions is the default...

It is the default because average Joe User doesn't know what the extensions mean. And face it, there are more Joe Users than developers by at least three orders of magnitude (if not more).

Completely agree - I show all extensions also. MS tries to make fools from users - we resist. :) Same idiotic conception is "Desktop" - never ever used it! Reason is simple - IT IS ALWAYS HIDDEN behind working windows.

Another alternative is to skip Explorer. I moved to Total Commander ages ago and never looked back.

Same here, I only use Explorer on computers I don't have ownership of. TotalCmd helps me in everyday work so much, I was very happy when I discovered my company has a license.

Disable hiding is one of the first things I always do...
