VS.NET Academic
-
I will soon format my computer and I wonder one thing about my academic version of VS.NET: Do I have to do something special to be able to re-install it again? I mean, when I first installed it I had to activate it through the Internet but what happens if I do it again? Does anyone here know about this? :~ Rickard Andersson@Suza Computing C# and C++ programmer from SWEDEN! UIN: 50302279 E-Mail: nikado@pc.nu Speciality: I love C#, ASP.NET and C++!

If it's anything like the rest of Microsoft's WPA software (prolly a good assumption), you'll either be able to reinstall and reregister with no problems, or regregistration will fail and you'll have to call MS & do it over the phone. Either way, it's not terribly hard, just annoying. ---

i've installed my copy of VS.NET Academic on two machines at least 4 times, twice each. With no problems. You are allowed to use it on up to 3 PC's, an oddity for MS Activated products.

I was supprised when I activated over the phone. They didn't ask for any identification. I could have been someone installing it illigally, but I gave the number to them, they gave me one back, nothing asked. So much for anti piracy. I could have been anyone.

I don't understand, surely that is serving it's purpose? It's not suppsoed to protect against physically stolen software. [edit] I think I get it now - you mean whether you are licensed under the academic terms? If so, surely that is enforced when you buy the box anyway? :~

Two points. David Wulff wrote: I don't understand, surely that is serving it's purpose? It's not suppsoed to protect against physically stolen software. I lend the software to a friend say. He can't install it due to activation, so he rings MS. They let him activate it. David Wulff wrote: If so, surely that is enforced when you buy the box anyway? I bought it perfectly legally off ebuyer.com. No age or occupation needed.

But don't they keep a record of the number of machines each key has been activated on, which restricts use past a certain number of installations within a three month period? I have never had any autoamtic reactivation troubles, but I would imagine you would need to give a reason why you wanted to activate the software on a different machine so close to a previous activation? :~

Yes, but i'd imagine that though they aren't necessarily in favor of you and your neighbors all using the same license, it's easier & cheaper for them to just turn a blind eye rather than try to get too strict on it. Now, if you and your 500 dearest friends all try to register with the same key next week, they may just take a different attitude on the matter... ;) ---

I did it and it works just fine, although I now have a copy of VS.NET Pro and it is odd that I don't have to activate that one. So you should, although I have had no problems transfering software licences (XP Pro) to different computers just had to call them up. -BestSnowman
