If it's not broken, fix it until it is
Download the ISO file for the disc, then burn the ISO onto a DVD disc. There are different ISOs on the web. Get the one for the latest build (10586). This build will save you a lengthy upgrade to 10586 later. Good luck!

Ya ok. I thought you meant you got it from someone/someplace I have a Windows 7 Pro disk. Maybe I'll insert that one... :) :) :)

Google Media Creation Tool. Download it from Microsoft, run it and Select Windows 10, your Language and Both (x64 and x86). Either burn straight to USB or save as ISO and use Rufus to burn ISO to USB. Boot from USB and install fresh, don't need a key as Microsoft have stored the hardware key fro your laptop.

Using the 7 disc will take you back to 7, of course. From my personal experience, I would recommend a little more persistence to get Win 10. Now that I have used 10 for a while, I will not go back to 7. :)

I know.. I was kidding. I installed it so I can use it as a test platform for an app I'm working on, so I'll have to fix it

So I installed Windows 10 on my seldom used laptop. I had Win 7 Pro on there. While I didn't use it much, it WAS working. Now, after installing Windows 10 - IT WON'T BOOT UP !!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: I get the Win 10 logo.. then a dimply lit gray screen.... and nothing else.. I was able to get it to boot in safe mode.. once... now nothing. MS Owes me $700 for a laptop that THEY broke.

I knew this so much lovely post was a rant! :laugh: Great job, for pissing your trusted users Microsoft! :laugh: You know, the way I see it, Microsoft is not anymore providing the "best" operating system out there. Ubuntu is much better! I would recommend (if there is still a heartbeat in your machine), take it to Ubuntu, they will make it perform better again. Don't fall for this Microsoft thing, it's sham. :sigh:

Correct! But you will be asked for a key twice during the install. Just click on "Skip this step" each time. When Win 10 runs for the first time, you should find that it has been activated.

I had a similar situation on an old laptop and thought it was toast. I created a Win10 USB boot drive (rescue disk - very small) booted from that on the broken laptop and had success installing Win10 and have been okay since. I think you can get the tool at (a little different than what I did months ago): Get Windows 10 - and create usb boot tool[^] Good luck.

I tried Ubuntu a couple of years ago, but after a lengthy installation process, I found that I could not get drivers for all my hardware. (One missing was for sound, as I remember.) I dropped Ubuntu like a hot cake, and will not go back!

I had a similar scenario with my Win7 Pro unfortunate upgrade and I left my PC online and tried every now and then to logon. During 2-3 days it was not responsive as in your case, but later Windows 10 started working more or less "normally" on this PC. It seems that Windows 10 needs indeed a few days to be online to "find itself" on the PC.... On the other hand I can confirm that the Windows 10 clean install works OK from start on. My co-workers were lucky getting recently now laptops with Win10 and I heard no complaints ... Regards,

I realize they may have drivers today, but considering the fact that I am happy with Windows 10, and the amount of effort it will take to switch to Ubuntu, plus the uncertainties around a new operating system, the switch just does not make any sense for me.

Over two decades of dealing with computers I've learned one thing... never, ever do an OS upgrade. Clean install that sucker every time.

Your statement is true for the initial build of Windows 10, but I have been told here on CP somewhere, that the 10586 build will accept a Windows 7 or 8 activation key. However, I have never tried this and cannot vouch that it is accurate! It is safer to precede a clean install with an upgrade, even if the upgrade fails. Doing a clean install after an upgrade worked for me on all occasions, even once when the upgrade failed. The clean install did activate, despite the failure of the upgrade.

That's probably not a bad idea. In fact, it's the route I took just a month ago when I upgraded the HDD in my main development system. Originally, I had intended to stick with a fresh install of 7, but decided to give it a go (upgrade to 10) before installing anything else. The first time I screwed up by not activating 7 first. After that, it went flawless. That said, I spent at least a week troubleshooting installers for older software tools that I use, some of which simply would not work and required paid upgrades. (Installshield for example) A month later, and after much customization, I really like it. It hasn't crashed on me yet! :)
