Macs for startups?

I have always been comfortable with Windows, it just works for me. Last year there was a purchase spree in office for Apple products. lot of macs , Mac book pro, Air, all those glossy-fancy things. The admin is a shopping freak! :) They justified it by saying we need these for working on Xcode. That's okay if the iOS team needs it. But somewhere in a corner they have this sense of pride by owning a lot of Apple machines. My instincts says they really do have this. If not, Then what kind of luxury is this, when people get these macs just to install windows/VS and work on the same old windows code? Same for Android, Android studio works just fine on windows. A good rugged thinkpad i5s/i7s would just do it best. To be honest, even a decent core2duo was doing fine except for the hyper-v/SLAT for Emulators support. They bought extra Macs and all these non-apple guys carrying a flashy ones in their bags. Now lets get the bite back from Apple! It's 4th machine now, down in a row with this same issue - HDD=>Motherboard Data cable burns off. Guess what? The authorized service guys have charged 19$ for the cable, and around 90$ as service charge. PER machine. So around 120$ per machine just to replace the cable. And a lot more Macs waiting in the queue. And our admins don't want cables be replaced by ourselves. They want to get this done through the "authorized service centers". Good luck to them! I just wishes all these money are used at least to buy some extra XBOX and new games :-O

Meanwhile, my wife's 2007 MacBook Pro ran fine for 9 years and my 2009 iMac is still going strong. "Emperor's New Clothes" indeed. :rolleyes:

They have issues with SATA it sounds like. A $2 cable, a $120 price tag to replace. On an individual level, if you're not cozy with computers then I get it, though I still find Apple practices to be predatory in general ever since I had a subordinate plug an iPhone into a computer to charge, and the thing bricked simply because there was a different iTunes account on the computer (and no, a sync was not requested). That's not looking out for your customer. Now in an enterprise environment things are different. Computers NEVER play nicely out of the box in that environment as pretty much any SysAdmin will tell you. Couple that with repair considerations and you have a very different operational model. I daresay that any company that uses Apple as part of their infrastructure is going to get exactly what they deserve, which is about half of what they paid for. Have fun explaining that on your quarterly budget.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro notebook from mid-2011 is an outstanding computer, but some of these laptops apparently were made with a bad batch of hard drive cables that failed after about a year. Advice from an Apple Tech: Three common Mac fixes | Macworld[^] We were referring these while trying to troubleshoot the machines. I think we got a bad bunch like this unfortunately. Or it could be because of power fluctuations - Is there a chance when everything is running through battery? or improper earthing? Don't know!

PCs do have problem quite frequently, if *we* are assembling it :rolleyes: I did have HP desktops that ran for ages. And I really really never got a problem with any of our thinkpad notebooks, we just had to replace the batteries. That made me a permanent fan of Thinkpads. We got R & T series, old ones. And some new i5 & i7s & couple of Edge series.

My current PC (a Novatech) has been going for a good 8 years - a few upgrades in that time, so much of it has been replaced, but that was to improve it not fix it.

OT - Are you and PompeyThree[^] cousins? Your pics show a family resemblance. ;P Back on topic: My point was not so much Apple hardware is better than XYZ hardware, but that for many Apple hardware is damn good and better than average. I don't understand this negative attitude towards Apple exhibited by so many Windows zealots on this site. If they don't like it or feel it over-priced... fine... don't buy it. But to whine about it is childish. It's not a zero-sum game. Neither Apple nor any other hardware manufacturer needs to fail in order for the other(s) to succeed.

If I didn't know any better, I'd swear that phrased this way, you're blaming the OS for the hardware it's running on.
Sorry. Certainly not my intent. They've been an assortment of homemade, Gateway, Dell, Compaq, HP and Sony PCs - if I recall.

Apple is just more babble from the big tower. Back around 1996 I got designated to get Apple computers on the internet. Win 95 was a pain in the rear to but no where near as hard as Apple. That was the start of the distaste for the fruit. I have built PCs and installed Windows and Linux. If it breaks I can fix it. My estranged went through 3 mac books before she got one to work. The Apple store did replace them for free. I do have an iPhone and it's okay. I just wish MS would get there act together and get a Win phone that had market appeal. The integration with my PCs would be awesome.

Those are pretty standard failure points for notebooks. And yes, I agree that Apple paid more attention to getting those common failure points robust enough to last. Then again, so do other companies.. but not with every model they put out.

Oddly, that's the same issue I ran into with my t43p :) .. and I still use it for remote access to work since it's got a 1600x1200 screen. These days it's running Win 8.1, but perhaps soon I'll see if I can migrate it to Win 10, just because.
