I need a pair of headphones! And I had to resist a powerful impulse to put HPQOTD as a subject... My multinational megacorp employer has decide it will be a magical productivity boost to move all departments into large open offices, where images from Orson Welles' The Trial[^] come to my mind. I am extremely sensitive to noise (cannot concentrate) and on bad days the first solution I think of is a decent XXL baseball bat. The second idea, to constantly walk around to remind colleagues of their acoustically pollutive behavior will soon make me the black sheep of the office floor. So I often listen to music, whale-song, ocean surf etc in my cheapo headphones. Not good enuff. I can distinguish seven conversations through the soundtrack. The "noise-cancelling" models from BOSE etc are not doing much to human noises so I think I really need something that blocks noise out mechanically. So they need to be super tight and extremely comfortable. No contradiction there eh! Cordless would be nifty but arent they often suffering from crackling etc? I would like decent sound quality but mega-hifi is not important. Suggestions, ideas, your experiences? Or even mental techniques? Thanks

I use THESE[^] - not for gaming, but for music. Simply because they are really comfortable and keep almost all other noise out...

obligatory commit strip[^] On the headphone side of things. For better noise cancellation, you need a closed back headphone; or an in-ear earphone. I really like the Sennheiser Momentum series; I currently have the Sennheiser Momentum in-ear; which is good enough for me in an (small) open-plan office. (edit) If the noise in your office is really annoying, tell HR about it; so that there is a paper trail regarding work disturbances regarding noise; and maybe tell will add noise reduction doohickeys (acoustic panels on walls and ceiling...)

After considerable thought - almost a full seven seconds, I realized the solution for your problem can be gotten by an investment in time that will achieve a long-term solution. Buy any sort of earphone or headphone. Plug it into your audio supply source. Crank that puppy up as loud as possible, maybe even louder. Shortly, the background noise, along with your hearing, will begin to diminish. After a while you won't even need the headphones any more and the office will be quiet. This is an economical plan, as well, since you do not have to keep replacing the audio systems of choice as things break/wear out/technology changes make them unusable. Q.E.D.

I know you said the Bose noise canceling ones don't work for you. I use the Bose OE2 and about half the time don't play any music. Its just something to block the noise. When things get louder (on my motorcycle), I use these Amazon.com: Ear Plugs - 50 Pairs[^] to keep my sanity on long rides. Using actual ear plugs will have a two fold benefit. 1. The sound will go down significantly. 2. You're boss will notice and ask. Then you can specifically state that the work environment sucks. The book Peopleware [^] has data proving that these environments are not good for productivity. If enough of your co-workers start wearing them, maybe things will change! Good luck, switch jobs!

If the QC15s don't work for you (mine are at my home office at the moment - grumble grumble), then you must be extremely sensitive. Might be time to update resume :) When I am working at home, I'll put on the QC15s. Pisses the wife off to no end - can't hear her calling me, talking to me (I'm just off the kitchen). She has to tap me on the shoulder. Now when the children were smaller, I could not hear them, but I knew something was up when the house started shaking. :omg:

I use a pair of these[^] while drumming. They keep the sound out pretty well. If your work environment is louder than a drum set at close proximity, you should probably just resort to your first solution. :laugh:

Take this opportunity to try something new :) Check out Bragi and their dash[^]. Hearables are going to be on the rise over the next few years and it might be interesting to try it. These have noise cancellation and many other features you will not get out of standard headphones. The price is $299, so it is comparable to most high quality noise cancellation headphones.
Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet. The interesting thing about software is it can not reproduce, until it can.

Then don't. I was making a suggestion to try something new. If you are hung up in how they brand things, in general I am guessing "new" things are not for you. FYI, the marketer of Bragi was the marketer of Beats, which is now owned by Apple. Yes, they brand things. They have to espeacially with "Hearables" (aka Hearing Aids). There is a stigmata with assisted hearing devices. By rebranding it all we can change that and honestly the world. So many people have poor hearing and would benefit from Hearing Aids but are embarressed. Morever, so many people could simply benefit from hearing enhancement. Hearing is part of life and enhancing it enhances your life. I guess my point is, you shouldn't get too hung up in branding. That is just marketing. Look at the actually functionality and effectiveness of devices. I could careless if it is called poostick. If it does what I need, I am interested.
