Why do people not respect the rules?
-
At top of the lounge is a sticky post that states some rules for posting in the lounge. In the last little while it seems that the rules have gone out the window. There have been discussions about sex and religion and blatant personal attacks. The worse is that this comes from long time members who should know better. The powers that be have provided a forum for discussing sex and religion and the personal attacks are not suppose to be here at all.

yes, I wondered if it was just me being sensitive and thought "I'll bite my tongue" - but the post beginning with 'Hello Infidels' is just wrong, anywhere, in my books - it doesnt matter that the poster probably has used that to mean 'unbeliever of Pastafarian', there's just so many other ways it can be mis-interpreted

I haven't noticed any about sex, but, given that sex is what most people think about for a large proportion of their time, you can expect it to be discussed -- and knee-jerk adherence to rules that go against human nature always ends up in an argument, which is far worse for the group than the occasional mention of sex. The only discussion I've seen here about religion is about a spoof religion -- i.e. not a religion, so discussing it is not discussing religion. Two trolls did try to turn it into an argument about religion, but they were handled. Again, your posting is likely to cause arguments over this, so the only thing likely to do any damage to the group is your posting. Apart from the troll issues, which were dealt with (by both personal attacks, which are well merited, and by "shunning"), I haven't seen any personal attacks -- and when I say that, I mean that statements like "I think you're an idiot" are not personal attacks, as such; they're contextual opinions, and it's how people talk. A personal attack has malice behind it, and any malicious talk needs to be nipped in the but. But discussing opinions, including opinions about the people you are talking to, is not attacking anyone; it is discussing opinions. BTW: Getting on a high horse about rules is more likely to increase malicious behaviour, rather than curb it.

It absolutely does matter that the poster probably has used that to mean 'unbeliever of Pastafarian'. You could ban every word in the English (and every other) language, by following the rule you're suggesting. "If a word could be misinterpreted, it is banned from the Lounge!" An entire genre of jokes is about making the listener think/feel one thing, then turning it around, and that is what this was. Or are you saying that we don't just ban every word in the language, but also all jocularity? (I've gotta admit, though, that there have been people whom I wished had been banned from telling jokes, in here)

Stop behaving like a troll, and we'll stop treating you like a troll. Seriously. I could name two currently-contributing members who were dreadful trolls, in past lives. Now they just enjoy the Lounge (despite still pulling the googling in an effort to *win!* thing, now and then). Stop the sht1, and people will stop disliking you.

Yeah, 'cause that'll encourage people not to be angry or malicious.

not at all Mark - I agree with PJ, that there's a place here on CP for sex, politics & religion, and thats where some of the recent posts belong

certainly you could, but I wasnt aware I was suggesting 'banning' it or jocularity - its all about context isnt it - in the lounge (context), I'd tolerate a frank, adult, educated discussion on any/all words that others would find inflammatory (but even having a frank/adult/educated discussion wouldnt guarantee that someone else wouldnt take offence :-( )

Well, I doubt that "infidel" is inflammatory to anyone who's watched Carry On movies -- and, since it's a foreign word, wouldn't banning it be racist, unless English synonyms were also banned? Censorship is a can of worms that we really should avoid opening. This group is global. If you start letting everyone introduce (and probably cause fights about) words that go against their religious and/or political preferences, we really will have few words left to use. ... But there would be no-one coming here to use them, so I suppose it's yin-yangy enough. I don't use words that offend me, obviously, but if I inadvertently use a word that offends you, Fred in Dubrovnik, Charlie in Patagonia, or John-Boy in Japan, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Good example, here: An American in another group (must be over 20 years ago, now) decided to take a poke at me for using the word "Chinaman". I had to point out to him that I was an Englishman, who lived West of the Dutchmen, East of the Welshmen and Irishmen, North of the Frenchmen, and South of the Scotsmen -- and that his people's mistreatment of several immigrant races, and the verbal taboos that ensued from it, had **** all to do with me. BanningWords==badIdea // IMO

I have got to apologise for the Flying Spaghetti Monster posting, I thought I was posting an amusing bit of news and did not consider the religious angle relevant. Actually I did not consider the religious angle at all! And you are correct it should have been posted in the SB.

Bullshit. It was and still is a fine post. Some people taking the piss and enjoying life. I didn't even click through as I basically knew what it was about. I did click through the responses as there is generally some good and funny responses to read. Unfortunately the god botherers turned up, spoilt it for all and as always I couldn't walk away from stupid. Not sorry and it was Sunday morning so sober as I took the daughter to soccer.

I haven't been around here lately, except to drop in briefly, but I haven't seen anything a bit offensive in the Lounge, Pete. I know you're not an alarmist, so I'm wondering what I missed. The Lounge has always welcomed humor and especially satire, if such is presented in a tasteful manner, without personal rancor. I haven't spotted anything that exceeds the bounds of propriety lately. But if it's happening, then I agree completely that such posts belong in the Soapbox.

I'd disagree - it was a good and innocuous post. Funny as well. It became SB material only when it was hijacked by Our Resident Troll. You aren't responsible for what anyone else does with your thread - and if the troll hadn't been fed, it wouldn't have been a problem at all.
