Why do people not respect the rules?

At top of the lounge is a sticky post that states some rules for posting in the lounge. In the last little while it seems that the rules have gone out the window. There have been discussions about sex and religion and blatant personal attacks. The worse is that this comes from long time members who should know better. The powers that be have provided a forum for discussing sex and religion and the personal attacks are not suppose to be here at all.

And what are the rules for those that slip through for the rest of us? For example, in our company, we have a HUGE rule. When it comes toe email communications, if a message can be interpreted in multiple ways, EVERYONE MUST interpret it in the MOST POSITIVE way! The reason is simple... We cannot correct what was written or sent. we may not know the ultimate intent of the email, and we MANY TIMES have misinterpreted something and got bent out of shape over it. So, AFAIAC, I would suggest we have a rule that says if someone posts something you don't like, that you do not respond to it, and that you are welcome to notify a moderator to deal with it. They will slip through. I accidentally asked a question about an article I wrote. I was not trying to create a Click Bait conversation, I was curious. And I was TOLD not to do this, and I wont do it again. You get used to talking to people in this forum as friends. And sometimes, one conversation you might have with your other friends makes it into the forum. It is the death knell of the forums if that is all we get, and we don't moderate. But PLEASE do not suggest we ban words like Infidel, etc. The answer to free speech you don't like is more speech. Or a moderator email with a reminder of the appropriate place, and a delete. In general, it happens, just like emails that sound worse than they were intended to be. It is how we RESPOND to them that determines the type of community that we are!

What I can never understand is why people use "children" as the reason to avoid talk of sex, as though pre-pubescent children would really care either way. Personally, I think using kids to justify avoiding taboo subjects is just a proxy of adults' personal embarrassment.

yes, I wondered if it was just me being sensitive and thought "I'll bite my tongue" - but the post beginning with 'Hello Infidels' is just wrong, anywhere, in my books - it doesnt matter that the poster probably has used that to mean 'unbeliever of Pastafarian', there's just so many other ways it can be mis-interpreted

The title of the OP was abstract. While I don't lurk here enough to be able to suggest why "those specific people" don't follow the rules, in general rules create a context that allows those possessing a resource to devote themselves to its enjoyment, rather than to its defense. In general "street smart" people are experts at knowing how far the rules can be ignored before the system curbs their behavior. In the interim, they can have a lot of fun (and amass a fair amount of wealth) indulging their egos at our expense. So: thanks for your vigilance!

All I did was mention frappe, and you replied with this: "Café Frappe sounds American and I have never seen these in the UK or France (or Luxembourg or Belgium for that matter" So I (having drunk the damned things all over Europe) told you what a frappe is, and what a cafe frappe is, after which you googled (very badly, getting very incorrect results that claimed that frappe is an American invention) and started up with the "Oh, I've lived in France for years, so I know better than you what a frappe is!" bollocks. If you can't talk to people without googling, try not talking at all -- and also try saying "Oh, I never knew that" instead of googling in an effort to get one up on the person you're talking to. If you can't behave, why don't you just stay in the Soapbox and pound on about GW?

I always thought it was strange when someone says to "respect" the rules. You can "ignore" the rules, "break" the rules, and "follow" the rules. But respecting them seems a bit like worshiping them which is against the rules. Barbossa: First, your return to shore was not part of our negotiations nor our agreement so I must do nothing. And secondly, you must be a pirate for the pirate's code to apply and you're not. And thirdly, the code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules. Huh. Well, I figured it was always because the rules were made to give them an unfair advantage, or that they realized that was the case to give someone else the advantage. That's how it seems to work here in USA for the corporate types. But then again, I've not been a fan of fascism. Guess I may need to warm up to it, both political parties seem to be moving away from democracy and towards fascism. Its either that or figure out how to escape the country and get somewhere safe. And by safe I mean where they don't tell you to give up your constitutional rights to gain safety that is merely a figment of their imagination.
