Public forum reflection

Following a forum thread I create on the Blizzard\Diablo forum here is some reflection / soul searching I had on public forums. - There are some people who take pleasure on putting people down. Whether they are right or wrong having a conversation with them is pointless... Since all they would say is something along the lines "you are wrong here stupid shit" don't expect any useful information.... They are quite... demoralizing... - There are some people who take pleasure in taking people up, they will say "you should do this or that instead" or ask questions - I was thinking about this (misguided) desire / pull to reply to those... unhelpful people... It seems like a total evolutionary failure, to get dragged into angry name calling... (since when they start their insult, the conversation can go nowhere but down from there...) But then I thought about politician. A more politician get talk time the more successful (s)he is. If you ask or have ... difficult question for her/him, (s)he will just pretend to answer it and go on on a pet topic... I guess the same could be done with a toxic post. If there is a desire / need to reply, one can (easily) recognize that this conversation is gonna go nowhere fast and instead .... mmm... not get dragged in an attempt at (intelligent) conversation anyway....

Interesting, I'm doing some research into a totally unrelated field. Having just acquired a pond in the lovely tropical far north Queensland I'm looking into populating it with mosquito eating fish. Interestingly there are actually such creatures that you can buy, I hope. Apparently coy/carp are lazy bastards and will not bother chasing anything more mobile than moss and weeds.

I really got to know myself, and my surroundings, when I first went on the internet. Apparently I'm not a nice person and I'm not very smart either. My mother appears to be a cheating slut. It seems gaming teenagers turn her on. It also seems everyone knows where I live, it's almost like I'm in the Truman show! I'm still looking into that, it freaks me out. Thanks to all those nice people on the internet for pointing this out to me. I will work hard to better myself so maybe one day we can all be friends :) That said, I don't recognize your experiences at all ;p By the way, don't think CP is that much better. I remember writing an article once that, I admit now, was shit. Some CP members (I think 100000+ rep!) really put me down, going into name calling and what have you. Knowing I could learn from these members (technically, obviously not socially) I thanked them for their comments and asked them if they could point me in the right direction. My first attempt was met with more hostility. My second attempt was more successful and I actually got some nice articles (although they weren't given to me nicely). Nevertheless, I learned a lot that day :)

Well, I am coming from a perspective that sees Homo Saps as a very messy analog-wetware computer grafted on to a feral beast oriented towards dominance/submission, hierarchy, and sexual monopoly ... i.e., a primate ... as well as all the other "good stuff" ... to some extent a prisoner of hormones. But, that big analog jelly computer ... so big that the size of the skull that evolved to hold it resulted in female human death during childbirth at a very high rate until modern times ... well, that brain is remarkable, and the jewel in its crown is language, and the paradox it holds is a never-ending series of mirrors reflecting mirrors: consciousness. But, so often, this remarkable container of the virtual illusion of a conscious self, somehow outside nature, immersed in a cosmic illusion of a one-way flow of "time," gets its illusion-generator (the brain) taken over by a virtual dinosaur ... the limbic system, and, while the body does its dance with the hormone de jour, the mind plays catch-up, editing, and re-editing, what we believe is our "personal history." So, it never surprises me when I see people use the relative anonymity of the internet to exhibit aggression; perhaps it's more surprising how humane a "virtual community" CodeProject is ? And, it doesn't surprise me when I wake up and regret something I said, or posted on-line, although I try and make amends if possible. Aristotle would have described doing something "against our better judegement" as akrasia, a basic component of the human condition, driven, he states, by desire for pleasure, and anger. Hey, you know it's very interesting to me that in Buddhism you have the concept of "mudita" as a part of the potential results (brahmaviharas) of the development of consciousness; it means "empathic joy," the ability to feel pleasure and positive emotion in the good feelings, joys, and positive experiences of others. It's interesting to think that I don't know of an equivalent in English, and the culture I come from. Interesting to contrast that with Nietzsche's idea that sentimentality was "schadenfrude without the pangs of conscience." Well, perhaps Nietzche's words (from "Human, All Too Human:) are an appropriate close to this dis-jointed ramble by an ersatz litterateur:

Congratulation for going through battlefield successfully! What do you call "the second attempt"? In my case the critic, which might know very well how to exploit a special game mode that I didn't quite describe successfully consistently almost verbatim said such things as: "you are wrong" "no, no, no" "shut up when you don't know" "where to start debunking this whole horseshit bag" but DIDN'T provide A SINGLE helpful clue. TWICE. One wonder if he knew himself about it, and just like to critic? But looking at his profile I could see that he knew, just didn't felt like explaining. Just pointing out I was wrong!

Hi, Super Lloyd, I have trouble understanding my writing, also :) Yes, of course, just because there isn't a specific English word that has the status of a "meme" that encapsulates what I see in the concept of mudita doesn't mean that reality behind it doesn't exits, and is not recognized in any culture. In English, I would use terms like "empathic joy," or "sympathetic pleasure" to describe it. fyi: a parallel to mudita (in the five brahmaviharas) is karuna, loving-kindness, often expressed as karuna-metta, "virtuous compassion." to your health in mind, body, and soul, Bill
