I don't think it's pleasure. Such people consider it their duty, a chore that must be completed for the betterment of the human race. They don't simply believe that you are mistaken. They know that you are wrong and that error that is allowed to go unchecked does damage to the balance of existence. You must be expunged from the knowledge base; forced out and far away where your insanity can no longer be harmful. Dying is the least you can do to protect the Truth.

CP member: Your article is bad and you should feel bad! (I'm rephrasing it nice). Me: Thanks for your feedback, could you perhaps elaborate on what's wrong with my article? (First attempt.) CP member: You are dumb and you will never learn and you should feel bad! (Something like that). Me: You're right, but I can try and it should be very little trouble for you to provide me with some terms and phrases I can Google, so if you would be so kind and stop cussing at me... (Second attempt.) CP member: SOLID. Me: Thanks *Googled, read, my knowledge got a boost, I got a promotion, I became lead programmer, my salary almost doubled* :)

Following a forum thread I create on the Blizzard\Diablo forum here is some reflection / soul searching I had on public forums. - There are some people who take pleasure on putting people down. Whether they are right or wrong having a conversation with them is pointless... Since all they would say is something along the lines "you are wrong here stupid shit" don't expect any useful information.... They are quite... demoralizing... - There are some people who take pleasure in taking people up, they will say "you should do this or that instead" or ask questions - I was thinking about this (misguided) desire / pull to reply to those... unhelpful people... It seems like a total evolutionary failure, to get dragged into angry name calling... (since when they start their insult, the conversation can go nowhere but down from there...) But then I thought about politician. A more politician get talk time the more successful (s)he is. If you ask or have ... difficult question for her/him, (s)he will just pretend to answer it and go on on a pet topic... I guess the same could be done with a toxic post. If there is a desire / need to reply, one can (easily) recognize that this conversation is gonna go nowhere fast and instead .... mmm... not get dragged in an attempt at (intelligent) conversation anyway....

I really got to know myself, and my surroundings, when I first went on the internet. Apparently I'm not a nice person and I'm not very smart either. My mother appears to be a cheating slut. It seems gaming teenagers turn her on. It also seems everyone knows where I live, it's almost like I'm in the Truman show! I'm still looking into that, it freaks me out. Thanks to all those nice people on the internet for pointing this out to me. I will work hard to better myself so maybe one day we can all be friends :) That said, I don't recognize your experiences at all ;p By the way, don't think CP is that much better. I remember writing an article once that, I admit now, was shit. Some CP members (I think 100000+ rep!) really put me down, going into name calling and what have you. Knowing I could learn from these members (technically, obviously not socially) I thanked them for their comments and asked them if they could point me in the right direction. My first attempt was met with more hostility. My second attempt was more successful and I actually got some nice articles (although they weren't given to me nicely). Nevertheless, I learned a lot that day :)

Sounds like you have some deep insight into being an asshole... You coming out of the closet? I now feel morally obliged to down vote you... thinking that you might be one... O shit, I just proved the point you were trying to make. Now I have to upvote you for being right in some or other way. X| :-P

I think it is a human flaw... it is in everyone. We humans have some flaws which we like and find difficult to let go of. We feel that it is who we are and will be without identify if we were to change it. Some humans are in denial about their flaws. In their view they are perfect and everyone else is wrong. These humans also have tendencies to think that the whole world revolves around them... This view in itself is a human flaw (called self-centeredness). It should be noted that at no time do I exclude myself from any of these humans I mentioned here. I have flaws, we all do. I have flaws I know about and don't want to change, we all do. I have flaws I'm in denial about, we all do. I sometimes think the world revolves around me, we all do. It is hypocritical to tell someone something is wrong when we do it ourselves... we all are hypocritical at times. A little food for thought.

Indeed, there are many socially inept beings on many forums. The anonymity of the internet works for them however if they were on the road, driving they might encounter this ^

No matter how much we believe we can pull ourselves up by use of the crutch of technology and pretend that the invention of civilization somehow imbues us with privilege, the sad truth is that we are a few genes removed from the filth and savagery of four-leggedness. It is nothing more than delusional hubris to believe to the contrary. ...and thanks to you now I have nihilistic thoughts that will plague me the rest of the day. :sigh: I need a drink to help me forget.

well I've realized from past experience that it is important to say it directly either with the icon or a disclaimer. Otherwise communication may get crossed, even if it's by someone reading it later.

I completely agree with your assessments on public forums. Unfortunately, this is a severe, negative outgrowth of the increasing impersonal societies that mobile\online worlds generate. Such worlds allow people to become anonymous in many respects, which in turn allows for less restraints on impulse control, which is what people like you are seeing in such areas as public forums. In earlier times, there was quite a bit of monitoring of such transactions but as the technology world has been evolving, this too has slowed to a great extent allowing for meaner, nastier responses to clutter public discussions that most often begin in a civil manner. Technologies are supposed to be merely tools to make certain functions in life easier to create and build with (ie: word processing). However, as the younger generations increasingly make it an adjunct to their daily lives where such technologies play an increasing role in supporting basic and critical thinking processes, the results are quite worrisome as you see in public forums. Unfortunately, the idea of going back to the basics in how technologies are used does not seem to be in the cards for most people so the public commons will continue to degrade proportionately until we lose it altogether...

When looking for motivation in a system involving financial transactions it is said one should "Follow the money." In a similar vein, when looking for motivation for such behavior as described one should look for the gain for the perpetrator. The desire to tear down others for no good reason is usually to build oneself up. "Follow the ego." The specific reason by case could be manifold but generally it is some sort of dysfunction in the junction (synapses). People just want to be happy, tearing down others makes them so because they're elephanted in the head. That's my guess. Don't feed the trolls.

Putting people down ... sadly codeproject itself is hugely big on this, look at the newsletters as a start. Wasted hurtful by-lines, in place of inspirational or insightful commentary. I still read the articles as they mostly contain the original spirit of this site, the want to share/learn in an open manner that acknowledges we can all learn more. I did raise this with one of the site managers, only to receive a reply more in tune of an anonymous post. Once he had calmed down he tried to explain his newletter by lines as humour. Sadly the difference between deliberate hurt and humour appeared to have been lost. Like teachers who stay too long, sometimes the art and sensitivity is lost.
