THIS.IS.ENOUGH. EVERY fucking time I want to print something with a damn officejet 6700, I have to BUY A NEW INK CARTRIDGE. This makes 15,9€ pro printed pages, and this fucking thing will not print in black if cyan is empty, it will not even SCAN if cyan is empty. CYAN is the ultimate power, since obviously, without CYAN, nothing is possible in this world. Dear HP, your hardware is a big pile of shit, your software must have been outsourced to a company that outsourced it to a company that outsourced it to a company that outsourced it back to your own developers, who obviously have never heard of non intrusive software working properly, or even about driver programming. So the office jet 6700 just landed where it always belonged to : in the TRASH. Oh, and this was the LAST TIME EVER that I had put hands on an HP product. Fuck you, HP, you suck big times.

Interesting... I have an 6700 too... Very good... I can print rich black if all cartridges have ink in, but I can print black-only if one of the colors are out... I even can print magenta without magenta ink - it only stops to confirm me, but if I respond 'OK' it will print crap of image with missing colors... Can even change cartridges in the middle of the printing (between pages - where it checks for ink)... The funnies thing, that the ids thought this printer need no paper to put in... The ever first closed-tray printer they saw :-D

No way. As soon as the printer detects an empty cartridge, it blocks (on the printer, not on the PC side), so you cannot do anything at all. Hitting a key or starting something brings the warning "Cartridge xxx needs to be changed". Mine also checks for ink during about 7 minutes every time I start it. You can hear it pumping, and pumping, and pumping, and pumping again. I can print two or maximal three pages with one cartridge, then they are empty.

This is one of the reasons that I am not a fan of "all in one" devices. OTOH, the requirement to have all cartridges before printing does make some sense; the printer has no way to determine what colors will be used in a page before it has received the entire page, at which point it is probably too late to tell the computer or the spooler "sorry, I can't print this". Perhaps colour printers should come with a monochrome setting, which when activated would tell the printer that all colours should be converted to grey scale? BTW, have you considered a colour laser printer? The toner doesn't dry out.

If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack. --Winston Churchill

The driver knows what has to be printed, and knows how much ink is left, so it can decide whether printing shall be allowed or not, or even, let's be crazy, LET THE USER DECIDE about what HE wants to do with the printer HE has bought. But this would mean sw development compentency for the driver, and this is obviously not a requirement for being SW developer at HP.

Are we talking about the same thing? Hp 6700[^] 2-3 pages sounds like a real bug... I can print a few hundreds before replacing...

It's all about selling ink. You're system was obviously defective with respect to ink detection but that's beside the point. Epson had a chip in each cartridge. HP has a serial number encoded into the cartridge, which, when it got feisty, forced a change. It remembered a three-cartridge chain.. All of this was to prevent refilling. Naturally, this helped the work-around industry. My Mrs. uses the printer/scanner like a copy machine so I refill the blank cartridge for as long as I can. Usually quite a long time. The company that I buy refill ink from tells you how to get around the 3-cartridge que with a single cartridge. It's still good to keep a backup. Now I had a Brother printer. It wouldn't to jack w/o the cartridge. These, unlike Epson & HP, were simple (cheap) tanks and refill was trivial. That was because of a single permanent print head. When the head went bad, out into the trash with it as replacement cost as much as the printer. I decided the more costly cartridge style, with built in print head, was cheaper as I refill the things. HP cartridge purchases are roughly every two years or so.

We have an HP Envy 5660, and have had no issues with it. Color ink out? Still prints black & white. No ink? Still scans.

The media suites that come with printers are often worth more than the actual printer. Those are an often ignored gem.

I have a Canon that does the same thing. It isn't just HP. It's just cheap printers. They have to make money somehow. My printer was free. So I can't complain when it goes through ink quickly.

Your rant is useless because you never had the balls to send this to Hewlett Packard, where it has "potential for change". No, instead you send it here, where your emotional energy has been wasted, once again. :sigh:
