IMO, I don't think the OP is trying to generalize U.S as a whole. Hey there is a situation that you need to have a gun, to protect yourself from bad people. You may not use unless if necessary. At least you can scare them.

I don't believe in patriots and martyrs - I would die to defend my family and eventually my country should it be attacked, but I don't think this makes me a patriot. Well this is a very complicated situation. To start of i have to say, as long as people can bear guns around shootings will happen. It does not matter if the guns are legally aquired or not. Additionally i will not roll up the debate about are people allowed to carry guns and stuff, we put that aside. So, i am not informed about the whole situation, thats why i can only give my opinion on the news. There are two ways to look at it, first of all why is there a tension between police and residents. If i understood correctly we have a big problem with that. The police is disliked by the residents making them feel uncomfortable instead of safer. This is the first point that makes me scratch my head. I read further that this might urge from the fact that they shot a young boy earlier this year. This leads to the question "Why is the police shooting people dead?". Since i really don'T know what happend i just might say either they were endangered and had no other option or they absolutely failed on their duty and did not even try to wound the boy and disable him. This is a thing only US residents can tell me. Why does your police shoot and then ask questions instead of the other way around or was the only option left killing him on sight? Is the police trained to kill instead of disabling first? The other way to look at this "accident" is why do people go be the judge by them selfs instead of taking the official way and send the "guys" (in this case if the killing of the young boy was wrong -> the police) to court? I guess they would not trust the investigators? They have no faith in their legislation and the correct use of it? Is it pure hate? Too bad we can't ask the guy why he did it. And now i hope someone answers those questions :)

There are many factors that contribute to an incident where an individual is shot and killed by the police; however, the predominate factor is fear of the unknown. My wife is a former DEA agent and she has described to me the situations she had been in during an arrest. When the police are called to a potential dangerous situation, tension is high. They just don't know what is going to happen, so they prepare for the worst, but hope for the best. Most of the time, everything goes to plan. There is no shooting and the situation gets resolved; however, sometimes things go wrong and someone gets hurt or killed either it be the officer or the perpetrator. There are a very few police officers that allow the "power/badge" go to their head due to ego and feel they can do whatever they want. They are the bad apples of the bunch. They are the ones that cause many of the situations you hear about in the media. It's a very difficult job and a dangerous one at that. They get very little respect, are ridiculed and get very little pay. It is a calling for most of them. On top of all of that, the media exploits those situations where things don't go according to plan and blows everything out of proportion. The media lies and distorts the truth to the point of causing riots. The main stream media is what is to blame for most of this. Rather than getting facts in the news, we get uninformed opinion pieces and rumors. Most of the reporters get their stories from blogs and posts and very rarely fact-check any of the data.
