Rumours are abound that Apple are about to bid for Universal. No official news stories as yet but a whois[^] on appleuniversal.com gives some interesting info. One very good reason for Apple owning a major is that Microsoft will not get the chance to dominate digital rights management for music/films/everything with WM9, as is clearly their wish. This will save quicktime from being an irrelevance in the DRM world. As an aisde, there are rumours that in response Microsoft are trying to form a strategic alliance with Sony (Sony downloads through msn this week) although this might prove difficult because of PS2/XBox. And if anyone asks, you didn't hear it from me. :-D Cheers James

I double Apple with go through with a purchase and that the stockholders would approve. Among many other suitors, Microsoft looked at Universal Music several months ago and decided it was the loser it is. (Why else do you think Vivendi is dumping it, because it's profitable?)

I am with Joe, hope Apple does not go through with it, don't need the dying breed that is a music company holding them down.
