StackOverflow sucks

I heard a rant earlier about stackoverflow being pretty useless. Well I tried to improve a solution and it told me I needed 50 points. Well I have been a programmer now for too many years, and worked with C# for over 10 years. No wonder one does not get answers.

Had a similar problem with WikiQuotes. I posted a few clever (in my and importantly, anyone else who's heard them) quotes. They were promptly removed because they didn't think the source (me) was famous enough. Same moronic catch-22 mentality. You can post quotes unless you're known and you won't get known unless you can post your quotes. The way it was said, moreover, spelled out "arrogant asshole".* The parallel seems to span many fields - the ones making the decisions, lacking any native ability of their own, need to make sure no one outshines their dull mental squalor. * we should be grateful, indeed, that Chris looks down from his lofty perch, just shakes his head, and lets the hamster continue turning their wheels.

Agreed. I have the same problem. Programming for almost 30 years, but anytime I try to post anything, I don't have enough rep points.

It may have some weird rules around it, but whenever I search for how to do something, that site is always at the top of the list. :^)

That's because you keep clicking on them. Most of the search engines remember which sites you clicked on and rank those sites higher for your next search. I've noticed lately that SO has been slipping down my search results page and MDN has been creeping up the rankings, and I've been asking questions about old-school javascript, so it's not like the info on one site or the other is changing in any significant way (Initializing an array in JS hasn't changed much for the past 147 years). It's because I'm purposely avoiding SO and favoring MDN these days for my JS needs.

That's really the problem with any system where reputation points are used to dictate what you can or cannot do in a public forum. Their goal is to get you to post regularly and they simply don't give a damn if you have decades worth of experience dealing with something being asked--they only care if you start contributing regularly. Only then do you become valuable to them. In the end, one-off answers are discouraged because of it and I'm sure SO is poorer because of it.

Then there are the excellent answers flagged as "unproductive". Or the excellent questions which result in a massive argument, no points of which come close to answering the question one way or another. (Just ran across one of those--everyone was arguing about how the person phrased the question, even though it was blindingly oblivious what was being asked. The annoying part is that I needed the actual answer.)

There is a simple way to prevent that. You can add "-site:stackoverflow.com" to your search terms and any results from that site will not be displayed.
