The more we get closer to the reality that we have to deal with in this election cycle the more I am inclined to consider something as extreme as the Mars One mission.[^] Seriously though, does anyone else get depressed with the realization that society seems to be in a downward spiral from our own making? Yayyyy a fabulous new iPhone that does nothing other than remove a standard interface! BUY IT! Whats that? Some politician lied? Oh they lied about the other politician lieing about lieing. Wait... What? Oh look Star Trek 50th anniversary! Hooray (please ignore the native americans being attacked by private security dogs that are not licenced to be in the state for simply protecting their land from being sold off to private entities using eminent domain for private entity growth)

Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet. The interesting thing about software is it can not reproduce, until it can.

I feel ya Bro. I didn't realize how depressing it is here in the States until me and my wife visited Scotland for a week. We both commented that it felt like a weight had been lifted, then we came back. X|

When you are dead, you won't even know that you are dead. It's a pain only felt by others. Same thing when you are stupid.

Yep, sort of same. Started the summer out in Japan for a couple weeks. While US politics did come up on their news it was still depressing in they were brutally honest (rather than all the propaganda)> I seem to remember them saying Americans seem to be screwed either way here. :(( At the time I still had hope...

I have made fun of the situation, but I do feel bad for you guys now. It must be particularly depressing because one simply can do nothing about it. :(

It is probably inevitable, but it may also be too late. Anyone that says we do not live in a police state is either naive or in denial. Corporatism/Fascism will plow forward and there is not much we can do here in the states. With things like TPP it will plow through other nation states as well. In a matter of a couple decades the statehood will be a thing of the past and just a geographic label.

Not really. This generation has suffered a severe degradation in education due to common core. American History and Civics aren't taught any longer, primarily the Constitution and Bill of Rights, math is taught to say that 2 + 2 = 5 (theoretically), and Ebonics and Spanish are favored over the English language. The American flag is disrespected and even objected to when displayed. Memorials to the twin towers on 911 are considered to be in bad taste and is seen as disrespectful to Muslims. Political Correctness is seen as the law of the land. The new iPhone has more news coverage than the current economy. Many Americans no longer care as long as they get their immediate entertainment, especially this latest generation. I could go on, but the point is that there aren't enough of us older folk left to turn the situation around. I do weep for the future of this country.

I think the problem has more to do with prosperity; it's a model that we've seen before. When basic needs are met at a societal level, then wants become needs and opinions becomes facts. I don't think individual age has a thing to do with it unless you want to go full-on Orwellian. Oh wait, that already happened with the PC movement and the SJWs. There goes that argument.

In my weee little town of 15K people (an hour drive to the next population in any direction) we have a WalMart. I know the GM and shift managers and many of the workers. They have a GIANT banner hanging out front that is accurate every day, they are hiring all positions, all shifts, well above min wage. On any given day, there are at least a half dozen pan handlers out in the parking lot begging for money. You can't offer them work, they don't want it, they want the free money, beer, and weed. Coincidentally, they also all were Sanders supporters when he was in the running, go figure.
