Hey everyone, I am the CEO of a golf wearable technology company. www.GolfTLink.com Essentially our product is just a sleek wearable display for data that is coming from the smartphone via Bluetooth. It has an accelerometer built in to calculate movement and can do over the air firmware updates. However, what is really unique is that we have a manufacturing process that allows us to reskin the entire watch and packaging from top to bottom with only 48 piece minimum orders from our factory. We are currently positioned as the only true white label wearable that can be produced at low volumes in our industry. The hardware, which we mass produce, is separate from the wristband similar to the first generation fitbits. It simply slides into our silicon wristband skins which is how we can do this through a custom injection molding process. There are thousands of app developers for open source wearables (Pebble, Android Wear...). However, I am wondering if anyone has ideas that do not make sense to just develop for an all encompassing wearable and could use a more custom solution like we needed. But the reality of starting a wearable company is that it is costly and time-consuming once you get down to the nitty-gritty of prototyping, certifications, mass production ect. I am wondering if we should make our wearable technology open source so that developers could essentially work to build their own applications and brand the wearable as their own without having to go through the insane process of building hardware. We have even formed partnerships that have open API's for capturing movement data like dumbells curls, steps, swings taken, pose detection and haven't done anything with that yet ect. Off the top of my head I can think of several industries this could quickly be expanded into with your own wearable. If we built a proper emulator for the watch you could essentially launch a full blown wearable product without having to raise a single dollar for prototyping or inventory. How about that? Launching a crowdfunding campaign for a product that already has inventory and just needs to see how many orders you wrack up. It would be a pretty decent side project for our company to take on. But I have always believed that open source is the key to creating change and adding a white label component on top of that could make for some interesting "out of the garage" wearable tech companies. Let me know if there is interest in this or any feedback! Cheers, Derek
