I'll be back in approximately 16 hours and 30 minutes. In that time I will get some sleep, get through a work day and then ensure I have a big drink. If all goes according to plan I will be back on Code Project at 18:53 drunk posting to commemorate 18 years since Melanoma took my little sister.

Cancer killed both of my parents so I take steps to avoid activities that would cause cancer. You post every year about your sister and getting drunk; you 'honor' her memory by getting drunk which can lead to liver cancer. Hmm.. think that one through.

With the subject you used I thought you had prostate cancer. Sorry about your lose, I lose my dad to cancer, and have had prostate cancer myself, but never though to get drunk over it.

The trouble is that you can't predict or prevent (the thousand forms of) cancer. The main cause of melanoma is sunlight, and the main cause of other cancers is oxygen. If you cut those out of your life, you're dead, anyway.

I lost both parents this year - also to cancer, but at reasonably old ages (well into 80's). There's a thought I wrote down, for the rest of us, about the value of life:
Winter is neigh; we trundle homeward in twilight; Swaddled, we prepare to endure. Eagerly awaiting the passage into spring; Forgetting how precious are these few moments We call a lifetime.

And I don't get the "swaddled" line; it and the subsequent line seem more fitting to infancy. I know that Spring follows Winter, but it just doesn't feel right.

Lost my father to prostrate C last year, also recently couple of younger brother's in law to Liver C, had a large melanoma taken off my own back and now forever in high risk category. Dengue A - now high risk if I catch any of the other 3 variants. Boo bl**dey hoo, sh*t happens to everybody. Furthermore, none of those ever make me want to drink - even more so to brag about getting drunk, that's just childish. Do you really think your sister would want you to get stupid to honer her??? Grow up and do something useful for somebody instead, THAT would show proper respect.

Sorry Martin, not trying to compete. You know as a survivor I don't count years, I count every day I still get, and when I get time (still have to work to support the family) I give back to other people like you and me that are suffering, yes volunteer work. I've realised life is precious, and the greatest gift one can give is to help other people. Now I realise people handle grief differently, talked to many that do a lot worse than you've suggested - that's OK. What I, and the colleagues at the center I showed your message to as HIGHLY OFFENSIVE (to the people we are helping, to the work we are doing, and yes to me) is YOU BRAGGING about getting drunk using the death of your sister as an excuse. Getting drunk - maybe not the best idea but as I said grief does different thing to different people But BRAGGING ABOUT IT: that is just 100% offensive. Working at an organization trying to help people: AND YOU GO AND BRAG THAT GETTING DRUNK IS ACCEPTABLE HIGHLY HIGHLY OFFENSIVE. Greave in your own way if you feel the need, BUT BRAGGING ABOUT DOING SOMETHING MEANINGLESS AS A WAY TO HONOR YOUR VERY OWN SISTER'S DEMISE - that is just sick and once more: HIGHLY OFFENSIVE!!! (You realise the most direct implication of that is that you blame her for what happened?) I'm sorry, but kicking someone when he's down is highly offensive. You could have been a lot shorter and still get the point across. There was no reason to phrase it like this. Just my opinion.

I'd like to imagine that about myself. But what musician, no matter how good, hasn't listened to other musicians and found like and dislikes. Indeed, all we do is a influenced by all we've done. Spiced by what we'd care to do; diminished by what we fear might come. Who doesn't see their fathers or mothers or siblings or friends affectations upon themselves? Thus, when ego tells me "I make the mold that I am", realization reminds me that someone taught me the art of mold-making and what things go into a mold. Everything influences everything. Everything does happen for a reason. Not to prepare the way to the future but as an inevitable response to the past.
