Yes, but thankfully not very much. :) Java itself is ok, but any program run under the JRE is automatically the slowest piece of software in the world. It's ok for web stuff (because of its cross-platform properties) but using it for anything else is the most stupid decision that someone could make, unless of course they don't care about having time to make (and drink) a cup of coffee in between each instruction.
