Would you have preferred Le Pen? Serious question.

The thread title is "Thank f*** for that" so I'm guessing no.

Of course not. The problem is that the continued inability of the middle ground parties to do anything about Islamicism is driving people to vote to the right. And eventually they will get in power. Then it is going to be a disaster. Of course Junkers hails this as a vote for the EU, it isnt, it is fear of the extreme right. The French are no more pro EU than the Brits, they just dont have the courage to stand up on their own. Junkers is of course trying to bolster his position in saying this.

That's called the lesser evil. Get used to it, it's all mankind has left... at least in politics.

The problem with moderates is that when you try to please everybody, you end up pleasing nobody. One thing about French politics that is nice to see is that, while there are two major parties, there are dozens of smaller parties that have enough following to actually get people elected. Here in the U.S. we have become a binary system which actively works to keep completing political parties subdued. One could argue that the only thing that they work together on is making sure that nearly every seat in Congress is filled with and Republican or Democrat. While this has worked nicely to keep them in power it has adversely affected the mindset of the party leadership. At one point, compromise helped further a lot of agendas at the same time. You didn't get everything you wanted but you did get something accomplished and made progress. Nowadays, the divide in Washington is so pronounced and so bitter that both parties actively try to undermine the other so the only goal is win enough seats in the election to gain or maintain a majority. Each party seems to take turns undoing what the other party did so very little progress is made on any social political front. With each political cycle, the number of qualified people in Washington decreases. Candidates no long campaign on a platform of goals and ideas. Campaigns have devolved from debating issues to identify the better candidate to a school-yard pissing contest that attempts to sway the electorate that the other candidate is worse. No intelligent, self-respecting person would put themselves through such torture. Eventually, only narcissists and sociopaths will be left in Washington.

Your answer brings up more questions. Should all cultures and people from other parts of the world be regarded as the same and have free movement in and out of any country? Should the United States have taken down its flag after being attacked by Japan at Pearl Harbor so as to not appear nationalistic by defending itself? Have you ever gone on vacation to another country, and, if so, have you visited Yemen, El Savador, or Somalia? If not, why not and should you be considered xenophobic for deciding not to visit? If we are in fact all the same, then why are our laws so different? For example, why is the federal age of consent in Mexico only 12 years old?

Well, I just described for you what the French 'Front National' are, traditionally. What you ask is whether the developed world should have standards. We should, and do.

Well, I have seen a some theories that state that the old aristocracy didn't disappear completely (some of which make pretty convincing arguments). Instead of exerting noble influence, they now exert monetary influence. Since I am no position to determine it either way, all I can do is speculate.
