The recording industry has tapped into two Internet file-swapping services and is flashing messages to music traders warning them they're breaking the law. "COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT WARNING," the message reads. "When you break the law, you risk legal penalties. There is a simple way to avoid that risk: DON'T STEAL MUSIC." At the same time, the industry is collecting the user names of people suspected of illegally offering copyright material with the file-sharing services Kazaa and Grokster, but it doesn't intend to pursue legal action, said Recording Industry Association of America President Cary Sherman. Recording industry targets users of Kazaa, Grokster with warning messages[^] Don't  and drive.

Kazaa is good because it forces the recording industry to deal with the issue of the Internet. If they don't want their content stolen, they need to make a legal way for people to download it. Some of the pay services available now (most notably Rhapsody) are coming close to providing a bonafide improvement to what's available through p2p services like Kazaa, not to mention being legal. This would NEVER have happened without p2p services like Napster and Kazaa.

So its normally if I hear it on MTV and sorta like it, i'll download it and then if I really like it, i'll buy it. But like I say, if I don't like it, i rarely download it.

Someone will just make a better fileshare app. It happened when Napster shut down. So if the RIAA do something to the kazaa network, another kid will make another app.

Years back there were similar arguments about casette tapes. Now who in their right mind would buy expensive bottled water when it is free from a tap?

The reason why people feel the need to steal is because all these are heavily overpriced. You can't buy all the music that comes out. Obviously, there are people who are so heavily into music that they want to hear anything that comes out. Music industry will have to make it really cheap. Otherwise, despite all the "artificial" barriers, people will still find ways to get pirated stuff. Btw, is hacking an ilegal operation legal? You have to pay for the well to be drilled and the pump plus the electricity for the pump. The downside is that if you lose electricity you lose your water too. Then again the cost to fill the $1 bottle of water from your tap is mere pennies (if even that) :) James "It is self repeating, of unknown pattern" Data - Star Trek: The Next Generation
