Manual transmission or automatic transmission?

From my point of view manual transmission is more like an android phone. What do you think?

So there you have it.

In the US, very few (I'd guess less than 5%) drivers can drive a stick-shift (manual) car.

Yay for me! Hopefully two of my three vehicles are 'out of scope' for potential car thieves. ;)

I only drove manuals from 1963 until 2013. Then my wife decided she needed a Merc. I'm still trying to get used to those silly plastic flappy things on the steering wheel for changing gear. They are not as satisfying as a good solid gear stick.
We're philosophical about power outages here. A.C. come, A.C. go.
I know what you mean. My wife's Acura has the floppy paddles and I just don't bother when I drive her car.

How about no transmission. My electric car is all direct drive. What phone is that one?

Automatic transmission is for women & Google( I mean for their autonomous cars) :-\

Hey now.... I have a 74 Nova with a twin-turbo 8.1L big block and a Th400 (3 speed auto) with a manual valve body and B&M Pro ratchet shifter (clicky click). I wouldn't say its for women because it scares the living crap out of my mother-in-law.

If you are not going to decide when to change gears you might as well take the train. :-D (Actually - on a semi serious note - having to change gears does help keep the brain engaged which is a helpful thing for a driver)
My understanding is, people who deal with both automatic and manual have to not to forget changing gear. Since my only concern is manual, changing gear is not annoying option, so far. Also I should mention, I just have started learning, at the age of XX(over 30).

There was a time people enjoyed Manual transmission(now a days, fewer people enjoy, less than 5%). But the need of easy learning and easy use Automatic transmission got popular. Here is a future that I predict, the demand of self driven car will rapidly increase. At some point people would feel the requirement of having a car that can drop off kids to school and then drive back to school to pick up the kids. or in simple, people will rather enjoy doing something else than bother with driving at all. Government will have to force people from not driving on the road, because voice of people who would love driving by themselves would be weaker than the voice of the rest(Just like now, 95% people in japan and in USA use Automatic, and get surprised when they hear that I am learning Manual). Government will look at road safety differently. This is far fetched. But there will be a time when driving by human will be obsolete. Required driving skill will reach the level of Driving a train. Driving would be job of absolute professional who would do rescue task on the road after accident or off the road special assignment. May be that would be the time, when I will accept this analogy :)

Manual. However, the new 10-speed automatics coming out have proven to be as good, if not better, than a manual on road courses. The down side is that automatic transmission raises the cost of the car by at least a few thousand dollars, so they're more expensive than their manual trans counterparts. Paddle shifters are gay.

Heh :-) I guess it gives automatic transmission owners the feeling that they are driving a semi-manual.

I understand people who prefers the manual transmission to feel they control the machine (this discussion is similar to the robotics/handcrafted issue, or the vynil/CD DJs,...). Personally I prefer to put my attention in other things: the environment, the traffic or the route and not to worry in mechanical issues.
