American politics has devolved into a spectator sport. The sad part is that the outcome of the match determines the fate of over 300 million souls.

That must have been when it started. The East German Womens swim team just looked and sounded like a bunch of men by accident in the 60s and 70s.

As I recall, other countries allowed their pro sports players to participate long before the US did. And it was in 1992.

Oops. Is there anything clean and honest about sport these days? If it's not the competitors cheating drug tests, it's the organisers and back handers. :sigh:

The Olympics (bidding) have never been corruption free, in the 90's I had a contract to track which committee member had received which bribe present just so they did not double dip into the trough. I like to think the teams are honest (or reasonably so) but the organisations behind them are just after the money, we recently had a cricket player revolt against their organisers, just to pick one.

Along with the Russian weightlifters and others, they were maintained by the state to show their superiority in a sport that wasn't mainstream or in any way a professional money making sport. Unless I can't remember a league for swimming back in the 70's and 80's. The basketball was professional and America hated losing to Russian and European teams of amateurs so pushed through allowing their professionals to play. Doesn't happen in Soccer but then your team wouldn't win if professionals were allowed.

Thought it was one of the US Olympics but didn't check. In what sports. From what I remember the teams that won were Communist and/or European and the state paid for the athletes but non played in any professional leagues.

Ya, it looks like I might be wrong, at least according to wiki. I seem to recall a video explaining that the Dream Team of the USA basketball really was not that big of a deal because the other countries had been using pro athletes for a long time. It looks like that video may have been wrong.

Yeah, thankfully not in anything that I do (although I don't compete either, I just do it for fun) :)

It's not about sports anymore. It's about money. Sport is the tool to get more of it.

M.D.V. ;) If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about? Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you Rating helpful answers is nice, but saying thanks can be even nicer.

It didn't used to be. Years ago professional sportsmen earned enough to get by, but also enough so that they could reach their peak performance level in the sport they loved. Yeah, quite a bit. Many sportsmen would have second jobs to support themselves and their families. Once retired from sport, they'd need to find another full-time job.
