As I recall, other countries allowed their pro sports players to participate long before the US did. And it was in 1992.
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who can extrapolate from incomplete data. There are only 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Ya, it looks like I might be wrong, at least according to wiki. I seem to recall a video explaining that the Dream Team of the USA basketball really was not that big of a deal because the other countries had been using pro athletes for a long time. It looks like that video may have been wrong.

Yeah, quite a bit. Many sportsmen would have second jobs to support themselves and their families. Once retired from sport, they'd need to find another full-time job.
